Abington Competes in Quad-Match at Clarks Summit

| Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Clarks Summit, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team competed in a quad-match hosted by Clarks Summit University on Saturday.
 
Match 1: Penn State Abington vs. Penn State Wilkes-Barre
Match 2: Utica University 3, Penn State Abington 0 (20-25, 11-25, 12-25)
Match 3: Penn State Abington 3, Clarks Summit 0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-16)
 
How It Happened vs. Utica
 
* In the opening set, Abington trailed 16-15 after sophomore Brianna Brozo recorded a kill.  However, Utica scored five straight points to increase its lead to 21-15 before taking the set 25-20.
 
* The Pioneers went on to take the next two sets by the score of 25-11 and 25-12.  Utica recorded a match-high 15 kills in the second set.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Utica
 
* Freshman Jayla Hickey and Brozo combined for 15 of the team's 24 kills in the match.  Hickey finished with a team-high eight kills, while Brozo finished with seven kills.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer led the team with seven digs, while sophomore Laine Kulpinski finished the match with 15 assists and four digs.
 
* For Utica, Eleanor Cepiel recorded a match-high 15 kills, while Lauren Jones and Livya Leider each totaled 11 digs.
 
How It Happened vs. Clarks Summit
 
* Abington jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the opening set and never looked back. The Nittany Lions led by as many as 11 points after back-to-back kills by Brynn Atkins and Brozo made the score 15-4.  The Defenders cut the deficit down to five points at 18-13 but the Nittany Lions followed with five straight points with Hickey on serve.  Abington took the set, 25-16.
 
* In the second set Abington broke through after leading 8-7 early in the set.  The Abington offense recorded six straight points with senior Taylor LaPage recording one kill and three aces during the surge that made the score 14-7.  The Nittany Lions closed the set with a 5-0 run to win by the score of 25-12.
 
* Abington trailed for the first time in the match when Clarks Summit opened with a 5-2 run. However a 7-0 run midway through the set propelled the Nittany Lions to a 14-10 advantage.  Abington never relinquished the lead the rest of the way and took the set, 25-16, to complete the shutout.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Clarks Summit
 
* Hickey led the team with a match-high eight kills to go along with four total blocks (2BA/2BS).
 
* Brozo totaled seven kills and had three aces, while LaPage finished with four kills and three aces.
 
* Schaefer recorded a match-high nine digs.
 
* For Clarks Summit, Chloe Burhans totaled four kills, while Kylee Cole recorded a match-high five aces.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Utica, while the Nittany Lions improved to 3-0 against the Defenders.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 as the Nittany Lions host both Saint Elizabeth University and Delaware Valley University in a tri-match starting at 11 a.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
