Abington Falls Short at Gwynedd Mercy

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball dropped a non-conference contest at Gwynedd Mercy University by the score of 3-0 on Wednesday night at the GMU Athletic Complex.

How It Happened
 
* Abington led 11-10 midway through the opening set but a 8-1 run by Gwynedd Mercy gave the Griffins an 18-12 advantage.  The home team went on to take the set, 25-18, to grab the first set in the match.
 
* The Nittany Lions opened the second set with a 4-1 run taking advantage of three errors by the Griffins.  However, another large run by the home team made the score 8-4.  Gwynedd Mercy surged again after the Nittany Lions cut the score to 12-10.  The Griffins ripped off five straight points to extend their lead to 17-10.  Later in the set, Abington came within two points of tying the set at 22-20 but the Griffins scored the final three points to take the set, 25-20.
 
* Trailing 11-10 in the third set, Abington went on an 8-0 run to take its largest lead of the match at 18-11.  Sophomore Morgan Schaefer capped the run with an ace.  However, the Griffins responded with 10 straight points to regain the lead at 21-18.  The Nittany Lions cut the lead to 24-22 after back-to-back kills by freshman Kayla Mason before the Griffins registered the final point of the set off an Abington attack error to take the set, 25-22.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Freshman Jayla Hickey led the Nittany Lions with a team-high seven kills to go along with five digs. 
 
* Mason finished with four kills and six digs, while sophomore Brianna Brozo totaled four kills and four digs.
 
* Sophomore Sara Schrader led the team with nine digs.
 
* Sophomore Laine Kulpinski paced the offense with 16 assists.
 
* For the Griffins, Ashley Brown led the match with 13 kills, while Kate Etter totaled 10 kills.  Maddie Stancil finished with a match-high eight digs.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 6-4 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8 as the Nittany Lions head across town to face Bryn Athyn College in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
