Abington Splits Home Tri-Match

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference contests as the Nittany Lions hosted a tri-match on Saturday at the Abington Athletic Building.  The Nittany Lions defeated Saint Elizabeth University, 3-0, and fell short against Delaware Valley University by the same score.

Match 2: Delaware Valley 3, Penn State Abington 0 (16-25, 23-25, 17-25)

How It Happened vs. Saint Elizabeth
 
* Abington made quick work of the Eagles in the opening match with all three set victories being double digit triumphs.  In the first set the Nittany Lions led 11-8 and would go on to record 14 of the next 15 points in the set, including a stretch of 13 straight points to win the set, 25-9. Abington recorded 12 kills in the set and took advantage of eight attack errors by the Eagles.
 
* In the second set another big run by the Nittany Lions turned out to be the difference.  Leading 11-10, the Nittany Lions went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 20-11 lead.  Eight of the nine points were off kills with freshmen Jayla Hickey and Kayla Mason combining for seven of them. Abington took the set, 25-13.
 
* Another late run by the Nittany Lions turned out to be beneficial in the third set.  Already ahead 12-11, Abington fired off five of the next six points to extend its lead to 16-11.  Later in the set the Nittany Lions went on an 8-1 run to close out the match with a 25-14 victory.  Sophomore Laine Kulpinski supplied a pair of aces in part of the final four points by the Nittany Lions.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Saint Elizabeth
 
*  Hickey finished the match with a season-high 14 kills to go along with a .684 attack percentage.  Hickey made just one attack error in 19 total attacks. 
 
* Sophomore Brianna Brozo also recorded double-digit kills as she totaled a career-high 13 kills to go along with eight digs and two aces.
 
* Kulpinski finished with a match-high 33 assists to set a season-high while totaling eight digs on defense.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer led the Nittany Lions with 12 digs.
 
* Mason added seven kills on a .412 attack percentage after committing zero errors on 17 attempts.  She also had five digs.
 
* For Saint Elizabeth, Ava Railton led the team with eight digs, while Sienna Volpe finished with three kills and five digs.
 
How It Happened vs. Delaware Valley
 
* The Aggies took the opening set by the score of 25-16.  With the set tied at 13-13, Delaware Valley went on a 10-1 run to take a 23-14 lead.  The Aggies followed by scoring two of the final three points to close out the set.
 
* The second set went back and forth with each team making multiple runs in the set.  The Nittany Lions trailed 21-18 before a 5-0 surge gave the home squad a 23-21 advantage.  Brozo was responsible for four of the team's five points in the run as she recorded four kills on the attack.  However, Delaware Valley responded with a 4-0 run to close the set at 25-23.
 
* The Aggies led 18-17 in the third set after back-to-back points by the Nittany Lions brought them within one point of the lead.  Delaware Valley followed with seven unanswered points to take the set 25-17 and secure the match victory.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Delaware Valley
 
* Brozo led the Nittany Lions with eight kills to go along with a career-high 10 digs.  She also had a team-high three aces.
 
* Hickey totaled six kills while recording two solo blocks.
 
* Schaefer led the team with 13 digs, while Kulpinski finished with a match-high 20 assists and five digs.
 
* For Delaware Valley, Gretta Schneider recorded a match-high 11 kills, while Grace Wilson led the team with a match-high 16 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Saint Elizabeth since 2013 as the Nittany Lions are now 6-2 versus the Eagles in the all-time series. Abington and Delaware Valley were meeting for the seventh time since 2014.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-4 versus the Aggies.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 26 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Immaculata University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
