Abington Falls to Immaculata, 3-1

Immaculata, Pa. – Immaculata University got the best of the Penn State Abington women's volleyball team for the second time this season as the Mighty Macs defeated the Nittany Lions, 3-1, in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Alumnae Hall.

How It Happened
 
* After falling behind 2-1 in the opening set, the Nittany Lions ripped off eight straight points to take a 9-2 lead.  Abington took advantage of six miscues by the Mighty Macs and capped the run with a kill by sophomore Brianna Brozo and an ace by freshman Jayla Hickey.  Despite the efforts by Immaculata, the Nittany Lions never relinquished the lead and clinched the set one victory with the final three points, including a kill by freshman Kayla Mason to cap the scoring at 25-17.
 
* Immaculata tied the match with a 25-18 victory in set two. Both teams went back and forth in the set but the Mighty Macs made a late run scoring the final five points of the set.  Emma Hodgson recorded three straight aces to close out the set.
 
* The Mighty Macs grabbed a 2-1 match lead after taking the third set, 25-17.  The home squad had two eight-point leads during the set with the latter coming at 22-14. Immaculata recorded 10 kills in the set and limited the Nittany Lions to just three kills.
 
* The Nittany Lions nearly forced a fifth and decisive set but came up short at the end.  Trailing 16-12, Abington scored four unanswered points led by two aces and a kill by Brozo to tie the set at 16-16.  The Mighty Macs responded with three straight points to regain the lead at 19-16 before the Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to one at 19-18.  Abington kept within one point until Immaculata went on a 3-0 run to make the score 24-20 before taking the set, 25-21.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Hickey recorded double-digit kills for the fifth time this season as she finished with a team-high 11 kills to go along with four digs.
 
* Brozo finished with 10 kills and filled the box score with four aces and six digs.
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer led the team with a match-high 13 digs.
 
* Sophomore Laine Kulpinski finished with 19 assists and 12 digs.
 
* Sophomore Sara Schrader added eight digs and one ace.
 
* For Immaculata, Hodgson finished with a team-high eight kills and seven aces, while Lily Burnette totaled 13 digs.  Dinah Stabinski also had double-digit digs with 12.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-6 versus the Mighty Macs in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 30 as the Nittany Lions travel to compete in the SUNY Cobleskill Homecoming Classic.  Abington will face Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 12 p.m. and then take on the Fighting Tigers at 2 p.m.
