Abington Competes at Cobleskill Homecoming Classic

Cobleskill, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team competed at the Cobleskill Homecoming Classic hosted by SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday.  The Nittany Lions faced Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) and the host Fighting Tigers.

How It Happened vs. MCLA
 
* The Trailblazers committed just nine errors on the attack and totaled 35 kills for a .313 attack percentage for the match.  In the opening set, MCLA total 10 kills and used a late 5-1 run to pull ahead of the Nittany Lions at 15-9.  Abington made things interesting after cutting the deficit down to 21-17 after a Brianna Brozo kill but the Trailblazers responded with the final four points of the set, including a pair of kills from Elizabeth Brown.
 
* In the second set the Nittany Lions tied the score multiple times late and eventually grabbed the lead at 20-18 after scoring three straight points.  The Trailblazers countered with four straight points of their own to regain the lead at 22-20 before taking the set, 25-21.
 
* In the third set the Trailblazers opened with a 5-1 run and never relinquished the lead.  MCLA led by as many as 11 points late in the set at 19-8. Abington cut into the lead thanks to five unanswered points that made the score 21-16.  Three of the five points came off service aces by freshman Jayla Hickey.  That turned out to be as close as Abington would get to the lead as the Trailblazers took the set, 25-17.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. MCLA
 
*  Freshman Kayla Mason and Brozo each finished with a team-high eight kills.  Mason also had six digs, while Brozo added seven digs.
 
* Hickey totaled seven kills, three aces and two block assists.
 
* Sophomore Laine Kulpinski led the team with 23 assists and four aces, while sophomore Sara Schrader recorded a team-high 11 digs to set a season-high.  
 
* For MCLA, Brown led the match with nine kills, while Chloie Garber and Audrey Melson each had eight kills. 
 
How It Happened vs. Cobleskill
 
* Abington fell behind early in the first set when the Fighting Tigers opened with a 7-1 run.  The Nittany Lions came within one point of tying the score multiple times down the stretch including at 23-22 after scoring three straight points, including back-to-back kills from Brynn Atkins and Mason.  Cobleskill took the opener, 25-23.
 
* The second set turned out to be another close one where Abington came clawing back down the stretch.  The Nittany Lions led 7-3 early before Cobleskill regained possession of the lead after a 5-0 made the score 16-12.  Later in the set, the Nittany Lions trailed 23-17 but rallied to score five of the next six points to come within two points of tying the score at 24-22.  Cobleskill went on to register the final point halting the Abington comeback bid with a 25-22 win.
 
* Abington jumped out to a 9-0 run to open the third set as the Nittany Lions took advantage of six errors by the Fighting Tigers.  As the set progressed, Cobleskill used a 10-1 run to grab its first lead of the set at 18-15.  The Fighting Tigers would lead by as many as six points at 23-17 before the Nittany Lions scored four unanswered points to make it a two-point set at 23-21. All four points came off kills, including two by Brozo.  Both teams would exchange points and Cobleskill sealed the victory with a kill by Kathleen Smart for the 25-22 set win.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Cobleskill
 
* Brozo totaled a match-high 12 kills to go along with seven digs.
 
* Sophomore Alyssa Flickinger finished with four kills and had a match-high five block assists. 
 
* Atkins came away with five kills and shared the match lead with five block assists as well. 
 
* Kulpinski paced the offense with a match-high 27 assists. 
 
* Sophomore Morgan Schaefer led the team with 13 digs, while Schrader added eight digs.
 
* As a team, Abington recorded a season-high 18 block assists and 10 total blocks.
 
* For Cobleskill, Alexis Mirando finished with nine kills, while Lydia McDonough totaled 12 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and MCLA.  Meanwhile, the Nittany Lions and Fighting Tigers, both former conference rivals, were meeting for the ninth time and first since 2019.  The Nittany Lions are now 5-4 versus the Fighting Tigers in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Monday, Oct. 2 as the Nittany Lions host Wilson College in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
