Abington Falls to Wilson, 5-3

Chambersburg, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest on the road against Wilson College by the score of 5-3 on Friday evening at Kris's Meadow.

How It Happened
 
* Wilson's Halley Shaffer registered a hat-trick with three goals on the evening.  Shaffer scored her first two goals within the first 10 minutes of action.  She scored in the fifth minute and ninth minute to give the Phoenix a 2-0 lead.
 
* Wilson doubled its lead as the first half progressed receiving goals from Annie Smith in the 20th minute and Maddy Millers in the 35th minute.  The four first-half goals gave the home team a comfortable 4-0 advantage heading into halftime.
 
* Abington spoiled the shutout bid by the Phoenix in the 60th minute when senior Grace Burns connected on her first goal of the season.  Fellow senior Lindsey McCarty assisted on the play. 
 
* Less than a minute later the Phoenix responded when Shaffer scored her third goal of the game in the 61st minute to complete the hat-trick.
 
* Burns scored her second goal of the game in the 70th minute marking her seventh multi-goal game of her career.  Junior Crystal Suin was credited with the assist on the score for her first collegiate point.
 
* Abington cut the deficit down to 5-3 in the 88th minute after a foul by Wilson inside the box gave the Nittany Lions a penalty kick opportunity. Junior Madison McDowell converted the PK for her fourth goal of the season. 
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Burns now has 25 career goals after her two second half scores as she is now tied for third all-time with Michelle Latronica (2014-17).  Burns is now one goal shy of second place with Brittany Middleton (2010-11) and two short of tying Mallory Mugnier (2013-15) for most goals in program history.   In addition, Burns has moved up on the all-time points list to fourth with 56 career points. 
 
* McDowell's penalty kick score in the final minutes of the game marked her 19th career goal as she is now tied for sixth place all-time in goals scored. 

* Sophomore Rachel Wilfrid and freshman Abby Brunnell combined for 16 saves in net for the NIttany Lions.  Wilfrid totaled a season-high nine saves, while Brunnell also set a new season-high with seven stops. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Wilson since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-1-1 versus the Phoenix in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13 as the Nittany Lions host John Jay College in the team's home opener at Memorial Field.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
