Abington Completes Mini Road Trip with Second Straight Win

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team picked up its second straight United East Conference (UEC) road victory of the week after defeating St. Mary's College (Md.), 70-57, on Sunday afternoon at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena. The win pushes the Nittany Lions' conference record to .500 at 3-3 on the year.

How It Happened
 
* A strong fourth quarter by the Nittany Lions turned out to be the difference in the game.  Abington, already ahead 47-43 entering the final frame, used a quick 9-2 run to start the quarter to grab the game's first double-digit lead. Freshman Kylie Frey jumpstarted the rally with a jumper and capped things off with a three-pointer that gave Abington a 56-45 lead at the 7:43 mark.
 
* The Nittany Lions pushed their lead to as many as 16 points after freshman Amina Reid converted a pair of free throws to make the score 64-48 with 3:13 to play in regulation.  Abington, from the start of the quarter to Reid's free throws, outscored the Seahawks, 17-5. 
 
* Abington maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the way to complete the victory. 
 
* Abington trailed by as many as eight points in the game late in the first half when the Seahawks held an 18-10 advantage.  The Nittany Lions scored the final four points of the opening quarter and entered the second down 18-14. 
 
* In the second quarter the Nittany Lions tied the game at 23-23 and took control of the lead on two occasions down the stretch of the half.  The latter coming at 28-26 when junior Kaya Mobley drilled a three-pointer.  Freshman Amirah Hackney followed with a three-point play on the team's next possession as the Nittany Lions took a 31-26 lead into halftime.
 
* Abington momentarily relinquished the lead back to St. Mary's midway through the third quarter at 36-34 but quickly tied the game and then retook the lead.  The Nittany Lions finished the third quarter ahead, 47-43.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Hackney recorded her fourth double-double of the season as she totaled 18 points and 13 rebounds.  She also had three assists and two steals.
 
* Mobley registered a season-high 21 rebounds to go along with seven points.  Her 21 boards marked the most in a game since last season when senior Angela Sanders tied the school record with 24 rebounds against Wells College.  Mobley is the fourth player in the program's Division III era to finish with 20-plus rebounds in a single game.
 
* Sanders led all scorers with a game-high 19 points.
 
* Reid also finished in double-figures as she totaled 10 points.
 
* For St. Mary's, Olivia Liszt and Stephanie Howell each recorded double-doubles.  Liszt finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Howell totaled 10 points and 10 boards.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the fifth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's in the short all-time series that debuted in the 2021-22 season. The Nittany Lions are now 3-2 versus the Seahawks.

Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in a United East contest.  Tip-off from the Abington Athletic Building is set for 7 p.m.
