Abington Dominates Berks in Record Setting Victory

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team set a new program record for points in a game as the Nittany Lions defeated visiting Penn State Berks, 104-64, in United East Conference (UEC) action on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  This is the second time this season that Abington has broken the century mark in scoring.  The team scored 101 points back in December in a victory at York College (N.Y.) to tie the then program record.

How It Happened
 
* Abington led from beginning to end apart from when the game was tied 2-2 early in the first quarter. The Nittany Lions ripped off 10 straight points to break the deadlock to lead 12-2 by the 6:04 mark of the quarter.  Abington led 26-15 by quarters end.
 
* Berks made things interesting in the second quarter after cutting the deficit down to six points at 29-23.  Abington quickly increased its lead back to double-digits with an 8-2 run capped off by a three-pointer by senior Angela Sanders.  Leading 37-25 midway through the quarter, Abington finished the half with a 46-32 advantage.
 
* Abington's lead swelled to as many as 27 points in the third quarter after junior Kaya Mobley knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 74-47. 
 
* In the fourth quarter, the Nittany Lions' offense continued to roll as Abington outscored Berks, 26-11.  Abington increased its lead to as high as 41 points on three occasions in the quarter with the first time coming at the 3:40 mark.  Freshman Amina Reid scored a fastbreak basket after forcing a turnover on the defensive end.  Reid's basket gave Abington a 96-55 lead.
 
* Sanders scored the record-breaking basket to push Abington to 102 points on the night with less than a minute to play.  Senior Mariah Moore capped the scoring in the game as she converted a pair of free throws in the final seconds.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Sanders recorded her 10th double-double of the season as she led the Nittany Lions with a team-high 26 points to go along with 12 rebounds and four assists.  Sanders shot an impressive 11-of-14 from the field and totaled five steals on defense. 
 
* Mobley also recorded a double-double as she finished with 10 points and a team-high 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.  She also totaled a game-high six assists and blocked two shots on defense.
 
* Amina Reid finished the game with 10 points and a season-high 10 steals to record her first career double-double.  Reid also had five assists.
 
* Freshman Amirah Hackney scored 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
 
* Freshmen Layla Reid and Kylie Frey each finished with 10 points.  Reid also had six rebounds and three steals.
 
* Moore scored a career-high eight points (3-6 FG) and totaled a season-high seven rebounds; one shy of her career-high.  Moore also had a season-high three steals.
 
* For Berks, Hailey Miller and Ashlyn Clark each recorded double-doubles.  Miller finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Clark totaled 20 points and 10 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 24th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 15-9 versus Berks in the all-time series and has won the last six match ups.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 as the Nittany Lions host Lancaster Bible College in a United East contest.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
