Abington Rallies to Defeat Bears to Kick Start the New Year

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team erased as 12-point second half deficit to rally to defeat visiting St. Joseph's University – Brooklyn, 71-67, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening at the Abington Athletics Building.

How It Happened
 
* The Nittany Lions found themselves trailing 62-50 after Brooklyn extended its lead to 12-points at the 7:01 mark of the second half.  Over the next three Nittany Lions' possessions, redshirt sophomore Christian Niles scored eight points, including back-to-back three-pointers that cut the Bears' lead down to 62-58.
 
* Abington made it a two-point game when junior Na'Kai Carew scored a layup basket with 5:06 to play.  On the next possession, senior Jake Schalki hit a jumper to tie the game at 62-62.
 
* Brooklyn halted the Nittany Lions' 12-0 run when Evan Sirakis drained a three-pointer to give the Bears a 65-62 advantage with just over four minutes to play in regulation. 
 
* Abington regained the lead with 2:09 on the clock after a Schalki two-point jumper.  The Nittany Lions led 66-65 and held on to the lead the rest of the way. Abington outscored the Bears, 9-2, down the stretch to complete the come-from-behind victory.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Niles finished with 18 points; one shy of his season-high to lead the Nittany Lions.  He shot 6-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-4 from deep range.  Niles also totaled three rebounds and four assists.
 
* Schalki registered his ninth straight double-double as he finished with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.  He shot 7-of-11 and had two blocks on defense.
 
* Fifth-year Alex Podolski recorded his third double-double of the season as he finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists.
 
* Shead totaled eight points (3-5 FG) and three rebounds.
 
* For Brooklyn, Sirakis led all scorers with 22 points, while Max Butler led the team with 10 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Brooklyn.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 as the Nittany Lions resume United East Conference play with a match up at Lancaster Bible College.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
