Abington Opens the New Year at Lancaster Bible

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team returned to action for the first time in 16 days with a United East Conference (UEC) showdown at Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon at the Horst Athletic Center.  The Nittany Lions fell short to the Chargers by the score of 73-67.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored the first 10 points of the game, including a pair of three-point baskets by freshman Amina Reid, to take a commanding lead early.  The Nittany Lions led the entire first quarter and held a 13-point advantage when Reid connected on her third three-pointer of the quarter to make the score 18-5 at the 3:38 mark.  Abington finished the quarter with a 22-15 advantage.
 
* The Nittany Lions never relinquished the lead in the second quarter despite Lancaster Bible cutting the deficit to a single point on two occasions with the latter coming at the 3:47 mark.  A jumper by Jenna Dombach made the score 27-26.  Abington followed with a 9-2 run to increase its lead to 36-28 with less than two minutes to play in the first half.  The Nittany Lions took a 40-33 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* In the third quarter the Nittany Lions stretched their lead to as many as 16 points on two occasions.  The first coming at the 6:13 mark when senior Angela Sanders scored a layup basket to make the score 50-34 and the next time was three minutes later after a jumper by freshman Kylie Frey increased the lead to 54-38.  The Nittany Lions finished the quarter with a 59-44 advantage.
 
* In the fourth quarter Reid opened the scoring with jumper to give the Nittany Lions their biggest lead of the game at 17 points with the score reading 61-44 a minute into the quarter.  Over the next five minutes, Lancaster Bible went on an 18-0 run to grab its first lead of the game at 62-61.  The Chargers connected on three three-pointers during their run, including two by Dombach.
 
* Abington recaptured the lead at the 3:44 mark thanks to a layup score by Sanders.  However, a pair of free throws by Alaysha Iwais on the Chargers' next possession gave the lead right back to the home squad. 
 
* Free throws played a key role down the stretch in the final 3:34 of the game.  After Iwais' two free throws gave the Chargers the lead, the team went 9-of-12 from the line the rest of the way.  In turn, the Nittany Lions converted 4-of-4.  Neither team scored a field goal during the final 3:34.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Sanders recorded her sixth double-double of the season and the 30th of her career as she finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds.  She also shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
 
*  Junior Kaya Mobley set a season-high with a team-high 15 rebounds and tied her season-high with eight assists.  Mobley also scored six points.
 
* Freshman Sereniti Minor finished the game with 12 points and five rebounds, while Reid totaled 11 points and three boards.
 
* Freshman Layla Reid and Frey each had eight points.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Iwais and Dombach each finished with a game-high 24 points.  Iwais finished one rebound shy of a double-double as she totaled a team-high nine boards.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 25th meeting between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-22 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, Jan. 8 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Stockton University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
