Abington Dominates Patriots in United East Contest

Phoenixville, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team made quick work of the University of Valley Forge with a 3-0 triumph in United East Conference (UEC) action on Tuesday night.  The Nittany Lions won the match by set scores of 25-10, 25-16 and 25-5.

How It Happened
 
* Abington opened the match with an 8-0 run and never looked back in the opening set.  Leading 17-9 late in the set, the Nittany Lions scored eight of the final nine points to take the set, 25-10.  Freshman Ellie Van Otten closed out the set with a kill as she finished the match with 11.
 
* The second set started out close as the Patriots scored the first three points of the set before the Nittany Lions ripped off five straight points.  Valley Forge tied the set at 5-5, but Abington followed with another five unanswered points to lead 10-5.  As the set progressed, the Patriots came within one point of the lead after a service ace by Abigail Sumego made the score 15-14.  Back-to-back kills by sophomore Kayla Mason and Van Otten stalled the potential run by the Patriots.  The Nittany Lions tallied eight of the final nine points once again to take the set 25-16.
 
* Abington dominated the third set as the Nittany Lions held the Patriots to just five points.  Leading 7-3, Abington followed with 14 consecutive points to take a commanding 21-3 advantage. Freshman Olivia Juan recorded five service aces during the run.  The Nittany Lions took the set, 25-5, after the Patriots recorded three straight errors to close out the match.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Van Otten finished with a match-high 11 kills to go along with a .450 attack percentage.  She totaled just two errors on 20 total attacks. 
 
* Sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin finished with six kills and three digs, while Mason added five kills, two aces and three digs. 
 
* Freshman Fabiola Medina totaled a match-high 17 digs on defense.
 
* Freshman McKinley Grimm paced the offense with 19 assists to go along with two aces.
 
* For Valley Forge, Rhena Lauver and Jada Flint each had four assists, while Mattayah Lyndaker led the team with six digs.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 14th meeting between Abington and Valley Forge since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 13-1 versus the Patriots in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns home to the Athletic Building on Saturday, Oct. 19 as the Nittany Lions host Saint Elizabeth University in a United East match up.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
