Abington Defeats Berks in Five-Set Thriller

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team won its third come-from-behind five-set match of the season as the Nittany Lions rallied to defeat Penn State Berks, 3-2, in United East Conference (UEC) action on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington forced a fifth and decisive set after defeating Berks, 25-20, in the fourth set to tie the match at 2-2.  The Nittany Lions led early in the set but found themselves trailing 13-11 midway through.  Berks increased its lead to five after four straight points made the score 18-13.  Abington responded by scoring five of the next six points in the set to cut the deficit to 19-18.  After an attack error by the Nittany Lions made the score 20-18, Abington bounced back quickly and ripped off the final seven points of the set to win, 25-20.  Sophomore Kayla Mason capped the run with a kill after five straight attack errors by Berks.
 
* In the fifth set, Abington trailed 13-10 but another late surge propelled the home Nittany Lions to victory.  Abington took advantage of four errors by Berks in the team's final 6-1 run and sealed the win with back-to-back kills by Mason and freshman Ellie Van Otten.
 
* Abington won the opening set, 25-21, before Berks came away with victories in the second and third sets to lead the match, 2-1.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* The Berks' offense produced a match-high 58 kills to just 44 by Abington, however Berks also provided the Nittany Lions with 40 points off attack errors. 
 
* Van Otten finished the match with 13 kills marking her third straight match with double-digit kills.
 
* Sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin also totaled 13 kills in the win to go along with four digs and two aces.
 
* Mason finished the night with eight kills and four digs.
 
* Freshman McKinley Grimm led the match with 36 assists to go along with 13 digs.
 
* Junior Morgan Schaefer and freshman Olivia Juan each totaled 11 digs, while freshman Fabiola Medina totaled 12 digs.
 
* For Berks, five players recorded double-digit kills, including Diana Stolzfus and Jordan Thompson who each totaled a team-high 12 kills.  Stolzfus also had a match-high 27 digs.
 
100 Career Blocks and Counting…
Sophomore Brynn Atkins totaled three blocks in the match with two solo blocks and a block assist to reach 100 total blocks for her career.  She is just the second player in program history to register 100-plus career blocks and now only trails former standout Andia Anderson for the program lead.  Anderson totaled 116 blocks in her four-year career (2015-2018).
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 14th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 4-10 against Berks in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn State Harrisburg in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 4 p.m.
