Abington Opens Fall Season with Victory at Eastern

St. Davids, Pa. - The Penn State Abington men's tennis team won its fall opener with a 5-2 triumph at Eastern University in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon at the Eastern Tennis Courts.  Under the new rules established by the ITA, the match was played to seven points with doubles counting as one team point.

How It Happened
 
* Abington earned the team point in doubles after picking up victories at first and second flight.  The team of Wenxu Gu and Krishna Gurram won their first doubles match against Jeffrey Day and Peter Folga, 6-2.  At second doubles, Anton Labas and Tripp Mangifesta led 5-2 against Ethan Goonewardene and Joshua Pavao and went on to take the match, 6-4. 
 
* In singles play, Gu won his first singles match with ease over day in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. 
 
* Gurram won his first collegiate singles match at number two with a 6-4, 6-2, win against Folga.  Gurram trailed the first set 4-3 before bouncing back to score three straight points for the win.
 
* Mangifesta cruised to a straight sets victory at third singles over Eastern's Jeremy Brown.  He won the match with the scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
 
* At fifth singles, Mark Tymchenko won his first college match after missing the past two seasons due to injury.  Tymchenko defeated Shane Witzer, 6-2 and 7-6.  He won the tie-break point in the second set by the score of 7-3.
 
* Labas went the distance with Goonewardene at fourth singles.  After dropping the first set, 6-3, Labas won the second set by the score of 6-2.  However, Goonewardene edged him out with a 10-8 win in the tiebreaker.
 
* At sixth singles, AJ Abdullah fell short in the opening set with a 7-6 defeat against Fredy Rodriguez.  Abdullah rallied and won the second set, 6-4, to force a tie-break set.  Rodriguez though took the tie-break, 12-10.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Eastern since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 7-1 versus the Eagles in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 as the Nittany Lions host Neumann University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 12 p.m. at the Tennis Courts on campus.
