Big Second Half Fuels Abington to Season Opening Victory

Doylestown, Pa. – First-year head coach Tiara White earned her first career victory as the Penn State Abington women's basketball team defeated Delaware Valley University, 81-55, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening at James Work Gymnasium.  The Nittany Lions outscored the Aggies, 51-23, in the second half after 32-30 at the half.

How It Happened
 
* Trailing 32-30 at the half, Abington opened the third quarter scoring the first 13 points to take a double-digit advantage.  Junior Tori Tolson capped the scoring with a jumper midway through the quarter to make the score 43-32 for Abington's biggest lead of the game to that point.
 
* The Nittany Lions increased their lead to 14 points in the final minute after freshman Hailey Revak knocked down a three-point to make the score 53-39.  The Aggies cut the score to 53-41 after closing out the quarter with a pair of free throws.
 
* Abington opened the final quarter with an 9-0 run to swell its lead to 21 points.  Sophomore Amina Reid converted a three-point play after registering a steal on defense and finishing with a fast-break layup before getting fouled.  Reid made the free throw to give the Nittany Lions a 62-41 lead at the 8:06 mark of the quarter.
 
* In full control of the game, the Nittany Lions led by as many as 30 points by the final minute.  Junior Nia Newman split a pair of free throws that made the score 81-51.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* The Abington defense held the Aggies to just six total field goals in the second half; three in each quarter.  DelVal shot a combined 6-of-40 from the field in the second half.
 
* Reid led all scorers with 21 points (8-15 FG) while recording a game-high four steals on defense.  She also dished out a team-best four assists.
 
* Nia Newman recorded a double-double in her Abington debut.  She finished with 17 points and a career-high 22 rebounds to go along with three steals.
 
* Sophomore Amirah Hackney also totaled 17 points and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.  Defensively, Hackney totaled two steals and blocked two shots.
 
* For DelVal, Haley Keenan recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out.  Ciana Feliciano added 10 points and nine board, while Alexis Wright totaled 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Delaware Valley since the start of the 2017-18 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-4 versus the Aggies in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 19 as the Nittany Lions host Washington College (Md.) in a non-conference contest in the team's home opener at the Abington Athletic Building.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
