Abington Drops Home Opener to Shorewomen

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped its home opener to visiting Washington College (Md.) by the score of 77-63 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington led by as many as 13 points early in the second quarter.  A three-pointer by sophomore Amirah Hackney gave the Nittany Lions a 28-15 advantage at the 8:18 mark.
 
* As the second quarter progressed, Washington College began chipping away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 34-34 after a 19-6 run over a seven-minute span.  A pair of free throws by Kaitlyn Boggs tied the game with 1:26 to play until halftime.
 
* Sophomore Amina Reid, who scored 20 of her career-high 33 points in the first half, drained a three-pointer to regain the lead at 37-34.  Reid then stole the ball on the ensuing possession which led to a pair of free throws by sophomore Layla Reid.  The Nittany Lions took a 39-36 lead at the half.
 
* In the third quarter, both teams went back-and-forth exchanging the lead multiple times. Freshman Hailey Revak tied the game at 47-47 with a three-pointer midway through the quarter.  The Shorewomen quickly responded with a three of their own by Abby Meredith to take a 50-47 lead.  Washington College went on to take a 61-54 advantage by quarters end.
 
* Washington College extended its lead to double digits in the fourth quarter after Boggs scored a layup basket at the 6:26 mark to make the score 69-58.  The Shorewomen maintained their double-digit lead the rest of the way after outscoring Abington, 16-9, in the quarter.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* It turned out to be a career night for Amina Reid as she scored a career-high 33 points on a near-perfect shooting from the field at 10-of-12, including 6-of-7 from deep range.  She also recorded a career-high eight steals on defense. 
 
* Hackney and junior Nia Newman each totaled seven points, while Layla Reid finished the night with nine points. 
 
* For Washington College, Boggs recorded a double-double with 33 points (13-15 FG) and a game-high 11 rebounds.  Karry Kelliher also registered a double-double with 10 points and 12 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Washington College.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Neumann University in a non-conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
