McDowell Sends Abington to United East Semifinals

Reading, Pa. – Senior Madison McDowell scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute of the first overtime period to lift the Penn State Abington women's soccer team to a 2-1 triumph over fourth-seeded Penn State Berks in the United East Conference (UEC) quarterfinals on Saturday evening.  Abington, seeded fifth, advances to the conference semifinals and will face top-seed Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, Nov. 6.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored the equalizing goal in the 70th minute when freshman Meghan McGinly connected on her 11th goal of the season to make it a 1-1 game.  McDowell was credited with the assist for her 10th of the year as she set a new single season record for assists.
 
* Senior Rachel Wilfrid finished the game with nine assists; including one key stop in the 78th minute to keep the game tied at 1-1. 
 
* In overtime, Wilfrid made three big saves early in the period before McDowell fired off a shot in the 97th minute that found the back of the net to send Abington to the United East semifinals.  The score marked her 25th goal of the season.
 
* Berks' Ashley Jocham scored the game's first goal prior to halftime.  Jocham broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute.

*  McDowell's historic season continues to build as she registered her 60th point of the season with a goal and an assist in the win.  The assist marked her 10th of the season as she set a new single season record surpassing former teammate Sarah Gibbons who totaled nine assists in 2022.  McDowell is also now tied with Michelle Latronica with 19 career assists for tops in the program's record book.
 
* Wilfrid recorded her 10th victory of the season in net becoming sixth goalie in program history to register double-digit wins.  She also lowered her goals against average to 1.04 which is currently the fourth-lowest all-time in a single season.
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2015 when the team defeated SUNY IT to advance to the then NEAC Championship game.  Abington is now 6-5-3 in the postseason all-time.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 18th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 2-14-2 versus Berks in the all-time series.  It marked the Nittany Lions first victory in the series since winning the first-ever matchup back in 2011.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 6 as the Nittany Lions travel to face top-seeded Penn State Harrisburg in the United East semifinals.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.  The winner will advance to the conference championship game and will face the winner of the #2 Penn College/#3 St. Mary's *(Md) semifinal matchup.
