Abington Comes Up Short in Overtime Versus Seagulls

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team fell short in overtime to visiting Salisbury University as the Seagulls came away with a 73-70 victory in a non-conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Salisbury scored the first five points in overtime to lead 68-63 after a layup basket by Kayla Nieberlein at the 3:13 mark.  Abington cut the deficit down to one point on its next two possessions.  Junior Nia Newman converted a pair of free throws and then registered a steal on defense leading to a layup score by sophomore Amina Reid.
 
* The Seagulls answered with a jumper by Jen Juhring to increase their lead to 70-67 with less than two minutes showing on the clock.  After back-to-back defensive stops, Salisbury made it a two-possession game in the final minute of the first overtime period.  Nicole Miller connected on both free throws to make the score 72-67 with :43 seconds left. 
 
* Outside a timeout, Reid drained a clutch three-pointer to bring Abington within two points at 72-70.  Abington forced to foul, Nieberlein split a pair of free throws for the Seagulls to increase the lead to three points.  After another timeout, Abington got off a potential game-tying shot with six seconds left on the clock but unfortunately was unsuccessful.  The Seagulls grabbed the defensive board and called a timeout to advance the ball.  Outside the timeout, Salisbury successful inbounded the ball as time expired.
 
* The game featured 14 lead changes and 13 ties, including six lead changes and six ties in the fourth quarter.  Salisbury held the game's largest game of six points midway through the second quarter.  The Seagulls had a 24-18 advantage at the 4:52 mark after a layup score by Remy Tolar.
 
Inside the Box Score

* Reid led all scorers with a game-high 23 points.  She made four three-pointers and had two steals on defense.
 
* Nia Newman recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds.  Newman also had a block and two steals on the day.
 
* Junior Naila Newman also scored in double-figures as she tallied 13 points (4-9 FG) off the bench to go along with six rebounds and a team-high six assists.
 
* Defensively, sophomore Amirah Hackney blocked a pair of shots and had three steals.  Hackney also grabbed five boards and scored four points.
 
* For Salisbury, Nieberlein finished with a team-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Juhring recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Salisbury since the start of the 2012-13 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-3 versus the Seagulls in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will open United East Conference play on Tuesday, Nov. 26 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Brandywine.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
