Abington Overpowers Brandywine to Open United East Play

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team had four players finish in double-figures including junior Nia Newman who finished with a game-high 19 points as the Nittany Lions defeated Penn State Brandywine, 96-45, in the United East Conference (UEC) opener on Tuesday evening at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Trailing 5-3 in the opening minute, Abington followed with a 20-4 run the rest of the quarter to lead 23-9.  Freshman Hailey Revak capped the scoring with one of her two three-pointers in the quarter.
 
* In the second quarter, Brandywine cut the deficit to single digits twice with the latter coming at 27-19 after a three-pointer by Sierra Diawara at the 5:21 mark.  However, Abington ripped off a 13-2 run the final five minutes of the half to take a 40-21 lead entering the locker rooms at halftime.  Sophomore Kylie Frey knocked down a three in the closing seconds after sophomore Layla Reid forced a steal on the defensive end leading to the three by Frey.
 
* The Abington offense was too much for Brandywine in the third quarter as the Nittany Lions outscored their counterparts, 30-5.  The Abington defense held Brandywine to 0-of-15 shooting from the field with points only coming off 5-of-6 shooting from the free throw line.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  Nia Newman recorded her third double-double of the season and her second straight after scoring a season-high 19 points (9-13 FG) to go along with 11 rebounds. 
 
* Hackney finished with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals.
 
* Sophomore Amina Reid recorded her second career double-double as she posted 12 points and a career-high 11 assists.  She also finished with four steals on defense.
 
* Revak also scored in double-figures as she finished with a season-high 17 points off the bench after knocking down five three-pointers (5-11) in the game. 
 
* Junior Tori Tolson finished with a season-high nine points to go along with seven rebounds.  Tolson also had two blocks and three steals on defense.
 
* Freshman Tarianda Washington grabbed double-digit rebounds for the second time this season as she totaled 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.
 
* Layla Reid had a career night defensively as she recorded six steals.  Reid also had six points, four assists and four rebounds.
 
* For Brandywine, Diawara totaled a team-high 17 points, while Jazmyn Kemp finished with nine points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the second meeting between Abington and Brandywine and the first since the 2012-13 season.  Abington is now 1-1 versus Brandywine in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 30 as the Nittany Lions travel to face St. Joseph's University Brooklyn in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
