Abington Powers Past Bears, 88-59

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Juniors Naila Newman and Nia Newman each recorded double-doubles as the Penn State University women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's University Brooklyn, 88-59, in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at The Hill Center.  Naila finished with 12 points and 11 steals, while Nia totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds.

How It Happened

* Abington trailed 11-7 with just over three minutes to play in the first quarter.  Nia Newman and sophomore Amina Reid scored on back-to-back possessions to tie the game at 11-11 before a pair of free throws by freshman Tarianda Washington gave the Nittany Lions a 13-11 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. Abington then closed out the quarter with back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore Amirah Hackney and Reid to lead 19-11 by quarters end.
 
* In the second quarter the Nittany Lions grew their lead to double-digits when Hackney scored a layup basket to make the score 31-20 at the 3:41 mark.  However, the Bears rallied with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 31-31 with :35 seconds to play until halftime.  Naila Newman ended the Bears' run with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession and then split a pair of free throws in the final seconds to give the Nittany Lions a 35-31 lead at the half.
 
* Abington held the lead through the third quarter and pushed its lead to back to double-digits late in the quarter.  Sophomore Layla Reid hit a jumper to make the score 48-37 with less than three minutes to play in the quarter.  The lead swelled to as many as 15 points (59-44) after junior Tori Tolson connected on a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter.
 
* Tolson's three-pointer gave the Nittany Lions momentum heading into the fourth as the team scored the first 11 points of the quarter to lead 68-47.  Amina Reid capped the run with a three-pointer at the 7:30 mark.
 
*   Abington outscored the Bears, 29-15, in the final frame on its way to the 29-point victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Nia Newman scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to register her fourth double-double of the season her third in as many games. 
 
* Naila Newman recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 steals on defense.  She also had five rebounds and a team-high five assists.
 
* Amina Reid finished the game with 18 points and nine boards to go along with four assists.
 
* Tolson also scored in double-figures as she finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.
 
* Layla Reid added 10 points, three rebounds and five steals; one shy of her career-high.  
 
* Hackney finished with seven points and nine rebounds.
 
* For the Bears, Mercedes Perez led the team with 13 points and six rebounds, while Kristen Donovan added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and St. Joseph's Brooklyn.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4 as the Nittany Lions resume United East play with a road contest at Cedar Crest College.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
