Abington Championship Bound After Defeating Cairn in Semifinals

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's soccer team is heading to the United East Conference (UEC) Championship game for the first time since 2018 after defeating third-seeded Cairn University, 2-1, in the semifinals on Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Field.  The second-seeded Nittany Lions will face top-seed St. Mary's College (Md.) in the championship game on Saturday after the Seahawks defeated Penn State Harrisburg in a penalty kick shootout to advance.  As the higher seed, St. Mary's will serve as host. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to an early lead when senior Eljo Agolli fired off a shot in the first minute beating goalkeeper Xander Jakeway for his sixth goal of the season.  Agolli's tally gave Abington a 1-0 lead within the first :24 seconds of the game.  Fellow senior Benell Saygarn was credited with the assist on the play.
 
* The Nittany Lions doubled their lead minutes later when senior Sean Horvay connected on his third goal of the season off a pass from Agolli.  Horvay's score, his second in three games, gave Abington a 2-0 advantage in the fourth minute.
 
* Cairn cut the Abington lead in half in the 10th minute as Brock Burres scored his third goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game.
 
* After a combined three goals with the first 10 minutes of action, both teams went scoreless the final 80 minutes.  Abington outshot the Highlanders, 13-7, in the game, including 8-2 in the second half.

* With his three points today, Agolli now has 22 on the season increasing his career total to 87 (31G | 25A). He currently ranks first all-time in assists, second in points and third in goals.
 
* Senior Brendan Werner made four saves in net as he picked up his ninth win of the season and 13th of his career.  He now has 118 career saves moving him into third place in the program's record book.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Cairn and the first since the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-1-0 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.  
 
Abington in the Postseason
The Nittany Lions are advancing to the conference championship game for the fourth time in the program's Division III era.  Abington is 2-1-0 all-time winning titles in 2017 and 2018.  The team fell short in the 2012 championship game to Morrisville in overtime.  The Nittany Lions are now 10-7-1 all-time in the postseason after today's win over the Highlanders.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 as the team travels to face St. Mary's in the United East Championship game which is set for 4 p.m.  The winner will earn the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.
