Abington Advances to United East Quarterfinals

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team will be advancing to the United East Conference (UEC) quarterfinals after the seventh-seeded Nittany Lions defeated tenth-seeded Cedar Crest College, 3-1, in the first round of the conference tournament on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* The Nittany Lions cruised to a 25-12 victory in the opening set to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.  After Cedar Crest scored the first three points, Abington went on a 14-3 run to take a commanding 14-6 lead.  The Nittany Lions led by as many as 13 points after a kill by freshman Ellie Van Otten made the score 23-10.  After a pair of points by the Falcons, Abington closed out the set with back-to-back kills from junior Alyssa Flickinger.
 
* Cedar Crest tied the match with a 25-19 victory in the second set. The Falcons recorded 11 kills in the set and took advantage of 10 attack errors by the Nittany Lions.
 
* Abington regained the lead in the match with a 25-18 victory in the third set.  With the set tied at 3-3, Abington scored five straight points to grab an 8-3 advantage.  The Nittany Lions led the rest of the set despite the Falcons coming within three points of the lead at 13-10.  A 5-1 run by Abington increased its lead to 18-11 capped off by an ace from junior Morgan Schaefer
 
* In the fourth set Abington trailed late by the score of 20-16 after a block by Akashia Johnson.  However, the Nittany Lions rallied and scored the next six points of the set to lead 22-20.  Both teams exchanged the next three points before scored the final two points in the set.  Sophomore Kayla Mason and Flickinger registered kills to secure the set victory at 25-22.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Brynn Atkins finished the match with six total blocks, including two solo blocks and four block assists.  With her six blocks against the Falcons, Atkins tied former standout Andia Anderson for the program's all-time record of 116 total blocks.  With one more block, Atkins will establish a new all-time mark.  She also finished the match with four kills.
 
* Flickinger recorded a match-high 15 kills to set a new career-high.  She also had three total blocks (2BS | 1BA).
 
* Sophomore Zayna Jamaladdin recorded 10 kills to go along with a match-high five acces.  She also totaled seven digs.
 
* Van Otten also recorded 10 kills in the match and had five digs on defense.
 
* Schaefer finished with a match-high 22 digs; one shy of her season-high.  It marked her third straight match with 20-plus digs.
 
* Freshman Hailey Revak totaled a season-high 41 assists to go along with nine digs.
 
* For Cedar Crest, Ellise Everett totaled a team-high 11 kills, while Daja Jackson recorded a match-high 25 digs to go along with 18 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Cedar Crest since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-3 versus the Falcons in the all-time series.
 
Win Number 21
Abington registered its 21st victory of the season which matched the most victories in a season since joining Division III in 2011.  The team went 21-10 in 2016 for the program's first-ever 20-win season in the NCAA era. Overall, Abington has had 10 20-win seasons dating back to 1973, including a program record 28 victories in 1993.
 
Abington in the Postseason
Tonight marked Abington's fifth appearance in the postseason and the team's first postseason victory since 2019.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-4 all-time in the postseason in the program's Division III era.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 as the Nittany Lions travel to face second-seeded Lancaster Bible College in the United East quarterfinals.  Match time is still to be determined.
