Abington Drops Season Opener to Neumann

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with a non-conference contest versus Neumann University on Friday evening at the Abington Athletic Building.  The Knights spoiled the Nittany Lions' home opener with an 88-74 victory.

How It Happened
 
* Neumann jumped out to an early lead and held a double-digit advantage by the 13:51 mark of the opening half.  A layup by Nigel Burch made the score 16-6 capping a mini 6-0 run by the Knights.
 
* As the first half progressed, the Knights increased their lead to as many as 16 points after a three-point play by Mike Smith III.  His free throw made the score 41-25 with 3:12 to play until halftime.  The Knights finished the half with a 47-34 advantage.
 
* Abington came out of the locker rooms at halftime strong as the Nittany Lions quickly erased the double-digit deficit. Abington opened the second half on a 14-7 run with redshirt junior Christian Niles capping the run with a fast-break layup after forcing a steal on the other end.  Niles basketball cut the lead down to 52-48 within the first four-plus minutes of the half.  
 
* Minutes later Abington tied the game at 56-56 when senior Myles Haynes knocked down a three-pointer.  However, the Knights responded with an 8-0 run to quickly regain the lead at 64-56 with 11:06 to play.
 
* The Knights eventually increased their lead back to double-digits (74-63) on a Gary Francis layup with just over five minutes to play in regulation.  The lead would eventually swell to 15 points (84-69) in the final minute of action.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* The game featured a combined 59 fouls and 76 free throw attempts as six different players fouled out of the game.  Abington shot 18-of-28 from the free throw line, while Neumann finished 34-of-48.
 
* Freshman Jahad Marable led the Nittany Lions in scoring as he totaled 16 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.  Marable converted 10-of-12 free throw attempts while shooting 3-of-4 from the field.
 
* Niles finished with 13 points (6-11 FG) while grabbing four rebounds and totaling a pair of steals on defense.
 
* Senior Kolby Miller also scored in double-figures with 11 points to go along with six boards and three assists.
 
* Freshman Ryan Black and senior Kobe Devine each totaled seven points off the bench.
 
* For Neumann, DJ Earl led all scorers with 21 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists. TJ Lewis and Smith each had 12 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the third-ever meeting between Abington and Neumann and the first since the 2014-15 season.  Abington is now 0-3 versus the Knights in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 13 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Delaware Valley University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 8 p.m.
