Abington Closes Out Calendar Year with Victory Over Stockton

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team improved to 7-2 overall after defeating visiting Stockton University by the score of 74-64 in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 50-47 entering the final frame and quickly regained the lead after scoring the first five points of the quarter, including a three-pointer by sophomore Amirah Hackney that gave the Nittany Lions a 52-50 advantage.
 
* Stockton responded with a quick 5-0 run of its own as Danielle Jeffrey nailed a three-pointer to give the Osprey a 55-52 lead at the 8:23 mark.
 
* Over the next five minutes of the quarter, Abington went on a 14-2 run to grab its biggest lead of the game to that point.  Junior Naila Newman, who scored a game-high 19 points, capped the run with a jumper to make the score 66-57 with just over three minutes to play in regulation. During the run, Hackney and sophomore Amina Reid each connected on clutch three-pointers to fuel the Nittany Lions' momentum.
 
* Abington swelled its lead to double-digits in the final minute after a pair of free throws by Newman that made it a 71-61 game.  Two possessions later, junior Nia Newman scored a tip-in basket to give the Nittany Lions' their biggest lead of the game at 73-61.
 
* Stockton opened the game on a 7-0 run but saw its lead diminish as Abington responded with an 8-1 run to tie the game at 8-8. Hackney split a pair of free throws at the 5:53 mark to tie the score. The Osprey led at the end of the quarter, 18-17.
 
* Late in the second quarter Abington grabbed its first lead of the game when sophomore Kylie Frey connected on a deep-range shot to make the score 31-29.  The Nittany Lions closed out the final 2:17 of the half with a 9-1 run to lead 37-30 heading into the locker rooms at halftime.

* The game featured 72 free throw attempts combined by the two teams.  Abington converted 26-of-40 from the line, while Stockton finished the game shooting 20-of-32.

Inside the Box Score
 
*  Abington had four players scored in double-figures, including Naila Newman who finished with a game-high 19 points.  Newman converted 13-of-22 from the free throw line and also grabbed six rebounds.
 
* Frey tallied a season-high 13 points after knocking down three three-pointers.  She also had four rebounds in the game.
 
* Hackney and Reid each totaled 11 points.  Hackney added five rebounds and three steals, while Reid totaled four assists and two steals.
 
* Nia Newman led the Nittany Lions with 11 rebounds while scoring six points.
 
* For Stockton, Lauren Winant registered a double-double with a team-high 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Grace Speer also finished with 14 points as she grabbed eight rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Stockton.  The Osprey won the first-ever match-up between the two schools last year with a 46-40 victory in Galloway, N.J.

Abington returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 2 as the Nittany Lions host Haverford College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.
