Abington Falls Short Against Haverford, 64-56

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end after falling short to visiting Haverford College, 64-56, in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington erased a 10-point deficit midway through the second quarter and went on to lead 31-30 at the half.  Trailing 26-16 at the 5:20 mark, the Nittany Lions went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 28-28.  Junior Esther Cole hit a jumper after junior Nia Newman forced a turnover on defense.  The Fords regained the lead on their next possession, however with seconds remaining sophomore Amina Reid knocked down a three-pointer to give Abington a 31-30 advantage heading into the third quarter.
 
* Abington pushed its lead to 35-32 early in the third frame, but Haverford fired back with 17-0 run over a six-minute span to lead 49-35.  Grace Leverton capped the scoring with a three-pointer at the 2:16 mark.  The Fords finished the quarter with a 52-43 lead.
 
* Haverford increased its lead to as many as 16 points with the latter coming at 6:41 when Audrey Jakway scored a layup that made the score 64-48.
 
* Abington held the Fords scoreless the rest of the way and cut the lead in half.  Hackney scored the game's final basket with 1:07 to play as the Nittany Lions made it a single digit game at 64-56.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sophomore Amirah Hackney led the Nittany Lions with a team-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals.
 
* Juniors Naila Newman and Nia Newman each finished with eight points.  Naila added five rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Nia totaled six rebounds and two assists.
 
* Sophomore Kylie Frey finished with nine points after shooting 3-of-6 from deep range.
 
* For Haverford, Brianna Feifer flirted with a triple-double as she totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.  Jakway led the Fords with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Haverford.

Abington returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 4 as the Nittany Lions resume United East action with a home contest against Cairn University.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
