Abington Falls to Griffins in Non-Conference Showdown

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to visiting Gwynedd Mercy University by the score of 101-61 on Friday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 14-6 early in the first half and used an 8-0 run to tie the game at 14-14.  Senior Kobe Devine, who led all scorers with 23 points, scored five of the team's eight points in the run, including the game-tying layup at the 13-minute mark.
 
* However, the Griffins responded with eight straight points of their own to re-establish the eight-point advantage that they previously let up.  Justin Savage made a pair of free throws to make the score 22-14 with 10:51 to play in the half.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy grabbed its first double-digit lead of the game when Aquil Stewart drained a three-pointer to make the score 29-17 at the 8:40 mark.  From there, the Griffins maintained their double-digit lead the rest of the game and led 53-33 at the half.
 
* The Griffins shot over 50-percent from the field in both halves and outscored the Nittany Lions, 48-28, in the second stanza.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Devine scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Abington offense.  He drained 5-of-9 from beyone the arc and also finished the game with four rebounds.
 
* Freshman Jahad Marable finished in double-figures as he totaled 10 points (4-8 FG) to go along with three boards.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Dom Thomas finished with a team-high 16 points as five different players scored in double-figures for the Griffins.  Stewart and Dylan Harris each had 12 points, while Shawn Summers, Jr. (11) and Travon Mack followed in double-figures scoring.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-3 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday as the Nittany Lions close out the 2024 calendar year with a United East match-up at Penn State Harrisburg.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
