Abington Outlasts Harrisburg in United East Action

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team defeated Penn State Harrisburg at the Capital Union Building for the first time in the all-time series between the two teams with a 69-65 victory in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon.  The win pushes Abington to 3-0 in conference play heading into the New Year.

How It Happened
 
* Harrisburg scored the first six points of the game and led after a low-scoring opening quarter, 13-9. 
 
* Abington tied the game at 16-16 after a fastbreak score by sophomore Layla Reid at the 7:09 mark of the second quarter.  However, back-to-back baskets on Harrisburg's next two possessions gave Harrisburg a 20-16 lead.
 
* Abington answered with an 8-0 run to grab its first lead of the game after sophomore Amirah Hackney scored a layup basket with just under five minutes to play until halftime. Abington led by as many as six points with the latter coming at 30-24 after junior Nia Newman scored with a layup basket.  Harrisburg cut the Abington lead to one point after scoring the final five points of the half at 30-29.
 
* In the third quarter Abington maintained its lead despite Harrisburg coming within one point at 33-32.  A quick 5-0 run by Abington increased its lead six (38-32) capped by a pair of free throws from sophomore Amina Reid.
 
* Abington led by as many as nine points in the final seconds of the third when sophomore Kylie Frey hit a jumped to make the score 47-38.  Harrisburg answered with a three-pointer from Giahny Correa as time expired in the quarter shrinking the Abington lead to 47-41.
 
* Abington swelled its lead to double-digits for the first time in the fourth quarter on multiple occasions with the latter coming at the seven-minute mark.  Junior Tori Tolson drained a three-pointer to make the score 54-44.
 
* As the fourth quarter progressed Harrisburg cut the deficit to three-points on three separate occasions in the final two minutes.  However, each time, Abington answered to hold off Harrisburg's potential rally.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Amina Reid led the team with 18 points to go along with six rebounds and a team-high four steals.
 
* Junior Nia Newman also scored in double-figures as she finished with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. 
 
* Frey scored a season-high 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range.
 
* Hackney added eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
 
* For Harrisburg, Jordan Carpenter recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 16 rebounds.  Mikayla Coleman added 20 points and seven rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 14th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 2-12 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.  Today's win marked Abington's first-ever at Harrisburg and the team's first victory over its rival since the 2020 season.
 
Next Up
Abington is idle for the next 23 days before hosting Stockton University in a non-conference contest on Monday, Dec. 30 to close out 2024.  Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
