Abington Wraps Up Regular Season with Win Over Seahawks; Shifts Gears to Postseason

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team officially clinched the third seed out of the Volt Division after defeating St. Mary's College (Md.), 74-53, in United East Conference (UEC) action on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building. The win secured a home playoff game for the Nittany Lions with the Volt Division quarterfinals beginning on Saturday.

How It Happened
 
* After scoring only 24 points in the first half, the Nittany Lions came out of the locker rooms at halftime firing on all cylinders.  Abington scorched the Seahawks' defense in the third quarter with 34 points to turn a two-point (24-22) lead at the half into a 21-point advantage by the end of the quarter (58-37).
 
* The Nittany Lions opened with a 10-2 run to grab the game's first double-digit lead at 34-24.  A three-point play by senior Mariah Moore at the 7:22 mark capped the run. 
 
* As the quarter advanced the Nittany Lions swelled its lead to as many as 23 points in the final seconds.  Senior Angela Sanders hit a jumper to make the score 58-35 before a basket by the Seahawks closed out the frame.
 
* In the fourth quarter the Nittany Lions' lead never dipped below 20 points until the 2:38 mark of the quarter when St. Mary's cut the deficit down to 19 at 70-51. 
 
* As a team, Abington shot finished the game shooting 20-of-35 from the field in the second half, including 5-of-11 from beyond the arc.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
* Sanders recorded her 12th double-double of the season after scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds.  With her 15 boards, Sanders increased her career total to 728 moving into second place in the program's record book.  She will enter the postseason 11 rebounds shy of tying Jessica Schmidt (2011-2015) for the all-time record of 739 rebounds.
 
* Hackney finished the night with 19 points to go along with six rebounds.
 
* Moore came away with 14 points to set a new career-high as she shot 5-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-6 from deep range.  Moore also had three rebounds and two steals.
 
* Junior Kaya Mobley filled the box score with 10 rebounds, seven assists, four points, two blocks and a steal.
 
* For St. Mary's, Olivia Liszt led the team with 24 points and nine rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the sixth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2021-22 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-2 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17 as the Nittany Lions host Penn College in the Volt Division quarterfinals.  Game time will be announced when the official postseason pairings are announced.
