Abington Falls to Gallaudet in United East Action

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) contest against Gallaudet University by the score of 76-66 on Saturday afternoon at the GU Field House.

How It Happened
 
* Abington opened with a 5-0 run thanks to a three-point basket by freshman Amirah Hackney to jump start the scoring.  Senior Angela Sanders followed with a layup basket on the team's next possession.
 
* Gallaudet followed with six straight points to take its first lead of the game.  Later in the quarter with a 12-11 advantage, the Bison went on a 10-2 run to increase their lead to nine points at 22-13.  Abington cut into the lead before quarter's end with freshman Layla Reid scoring back-to-back fastbreak baskets in the final two possessions to make the score 22-17.
 
* In the second quarter, a 16-4 surge by the Bison over the first 6:34 of the quarter gave the home team their biggest lead of the game up until that point at 38-21.  A jumper by Claire Tucker finished off the run for the Bison. Gallaudet finished the half with a 44-29 lead.
 
* Gallaudet swelled its lead to 22 points midway through the third quarter.  A pair of free throws by Rajena Guettler made the score 55-33. 
 
* Abington made a run with less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter.  Trailing 70-51, the Nittany Lions erased a good chunk of Gallaudet's lead thanks to a 13-2 run.  A three-pointer by Amirah Hackney made it an eight-point game (72-64) with :55 seconds remaining. 
 
* Time and free throws weren't on the Nittany Lions' side as the Bison converted 4-of-6 from free throw line in the final :55 seconds to hold off their guests.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* It was a career day for Hackney as she netted a season-high 28 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and four steals.  She also connected on 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
* Sanders also hit the 20-mark in scoring as she finished the game with 22 points while grabbing seven rebounds.  She also had three steals on defense.  Sanders is three rebounds shy of becoming the third player in program history to reach 700 career steals.
 
* Reid scored in double-figures as well as she came away with 10 points, four rebounds and five assists. 
 
* For Gallaudet, Cassidy Perry finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 28 points (10-14 FG) and nine boards.  Guettler added 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 25th meeting between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-17 versus the Bison in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 as the Nittany Lions hit the road for the last time this regular season to face Penn State Harrisburg in United East action.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
