Yanss, Casale Stifle Gryphons Offense in Doubleheader Sweep

Abington, Pa. – Penn State Abington junior Gretchen Yanss tossed her second career perfect game in game one of a non-conference doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence College on Monday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  Freshman Paula Casale followed that up with her first career shutout as she pitched a one-hitter in game two.  The Nittany Lions defeated the Gryphons by the scores of 23-0 and 18-0.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back.  Yanss helped her own case with a three-run double and then scored on a double by junior Drew Liss.  Freshman Marlena Hacker drove in the game's first run to start the five-run inning.
 
* Yanss took care of the rest as she retired all 15 batters faced with seven coming via the strikeout. 
 
* The Nittany Lions scored seven runs in the second inning and erupted for 11 runs in the third. Junior Callie Chambers had a three-run double in the second, while freshman Victoria Butler and Hacker each drove in a pair in the third inning.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Yanss' perfect game is the second of her career and just the third in the program's NCAA Division III era.  She also went 4-for-4 at the plate tying her career high for hits in a game.  Yanss also drove in a career-high five runs and scored three times.
 
* Butler finished 4-for-4 with three runs and a season-high four RBI.  She also stole a season-high four bases.
 
* Chambers was also perfect at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with four runs and four RBI setting a new career-high in both categories.
 
* Liss and Hacker each drove in three runs.  Liss finished 3-for-4 with two runs, while Hacker went 2-for-3 with three runs.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Just like the opener, the Nittany Lions jumped out to a first inning lead scoring six runs on five hits and taking advantage of two errors by the Gryphons. Sophomore Emily Foxhill capped the scoring with a two-run single.
 
* Abington sent 17 batters to the plate in the second inning on its way to scoring 11 runs on 11 hits.  Freshman Isabella Antosiewicz and Hacker got things going with back-to-back doubles to start the inning.  The first six batters in the inning reached base before Sarah Lawrence was able to record an out. Antosiewicz and Hacker each had two hits in the inning.
 
* The Nittany Lions scored their final run of the game in the third inning when Casale drew a bases loaded walk forcing in Butler who led the inning off with an infield hit.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Casale tossed her second straight complete game and her first career shutout.  She struck out a season-high nine batters and her only blemish on the day was a fifth inning single.
 
* Foxhill went 3-for-4 at the plate with a career-high three RBI.
 
* Antosiewicz finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.
 
* Hacker drove in another three runs to finish the day with six RBI.  She also went 3-for-4 with three runs in game two.
 
* Butler finished 2-for-5 with three runs.
 
* Freshman Ava Livingston went 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI.
 
* Freshman Rylee Albany had a pair of hits as she finished 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI.
 
* For Sarah Lawrence, Anna Brand had the team's lone hit.  Shirin Pechefsky pitched two innings of relief and held the Nittany Lions to one run on three hits while striking out three.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Sarah Lawrence.
 
Next Up
The Nittany Lions return to action on Tuesday with another home doubleheader.  Abington will host Immaculata University in a pair of non-conference games starting at 3 p.m.
