Abington Falls to Eastern in Spring Home Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team dropped a non-conference contest against Eastern University by the score of 6-3 in the team's spring home opener on Wednesday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took the point at first doubles as the team of senior Elizabeth Turner and freshman Laurie Flemming shutout Eastern's Sarah Mower and Rhyan Metzger, 8-0. 
 
* The Eagles took second and third doubles to lead 2-1 after doubles competition. Senior Elisa Steinhardt and Soniyah Youngblood battled Trinity Gruber and Anisah Smith to an 8-6 score at second doubles.
 
* In singles play, Flemming cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles after dropping just one game to Gruber.  Flemming is now 4-1 on the year in singles play.
 
* Youngblood picked up her second victory at singles play after coming away with a three-set triumph over Grace Schriever at the fourth spot.  Youngblood won the first set, 7-5, before Schriever took the second set by the score of 6-4 to force a third and decisive set.  Youngblood trailed the super tiebreaker, 2-1, and followed with seven straight points to go up 8-2.  She won the tiebreaker, 10-5.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Eastern since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-7 versus the Eagles in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 16 as the Nittany Lions hit the road to face Moravian University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
