Abington Defeats Bryn Athyn, 6-3

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the spring season with a 6-3 triumph over visiting Bryan Athyn College in a non-conference match on Thursday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took control of the match early on after sweeping all three doubles competitions.  Senior Elisa Steinhardt and freshman Laurie Flemming led the entire way at first doubles and finished off Thea Keal and Hunter Daum with an 8-2 victory.
 
* At second doubles, the team of junior Isabella DePorre and sophomore Soniyah Youngblood led Bryn Athyn's Amber Dawes and Ava Fino majority of the way and took the match, 8-6. 
 
* The team of senior Taylor LaPage and sophomore Abbey Anderson took third doubles by the score of 8-4 after leading most of the match against Katherine Hyatt and Jenna Hartshaw.
 
* Flemming picked up her fifth victory of the season at first singles as she defeated Annae Connelly in straight sets.  Flemming won by the score of 6-0 and 6-1.
 
* LaPage earned her first singles victory of the season after defeating Keren Abraham with ease in straight sets.  LaPage won her match by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
 
* The Nittany Lions clinched the win with DePorre's victory at fourth singles.  DePorre defeated Dawes in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores.
 
* Bryn Athyn picked up points at second, third and fifth singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Bryn Athyn since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-0 versus the Lions in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 26 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Neumann University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 3 p.m.
