Abington Swept by St. Mary’s in United East DH

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington baseball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at St. Mary's College (Md.) on Friday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest.  The Seahawks took game one, 6-5, in extra innings and then went on to win game two, 7-6.

How It Happened (Game 1)


* Abington scored four runs in the top half of the second inning to grab it first lead of the game at 4-1.  Senior Montana Milward and junior Jake Fallers started the inning with back-to-back walks.  Two batters later, freshmen Gabe Marrero and Dominic Hoguet each came through with run scoring hits.  Senior Sean Doherty and freshman Donato Incollingo also drove in runs in the inning.
 
* The scored remained 4-1 in favor of the Nittany Lions until the bottom of the fifth when the Seahawks tied the game with a three-run frame.  Ian Walters cleared the bases with a three-run double.
 
* The game went into extra innings and the Nittany Lions scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eight. Incollingo led the inning off with a base hit through the left side.  Two batters later, Milward singled to right-center field to move Incollingo over to third.  Fallers followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Nittany Lions a 5-4 lead.
 
* In the bottom of the eighth the Seahawks loaded the bases and scored the game tying run on an Abington error.  Chase O'Dell then stepped up and singled through the left side to drive in Myles Pittman for the walk-off victory.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Five different players drove in runs for the Nittany Lions, including Doherty who finished 2-for-4 at the plate.
 
* Fallers drew a pair of walks while scoring a run and driving one in.  
 
* Freshman Logan Woodward pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.  He allowed just one hit and struck out a batter.
 
* For St. Mary's, Walters went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while O'Dell finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington trailed 7-1 entering the top half of the seventh inning.  The Nittany Lions made things interesting scoring three runs in the inning to make the score 7-4.  Abington loaded the bases as the first three batters reached base.  Doherty followed with a single to right field scoring Marrero.  Incollingo was then hit by a pitch forcing in a run and then junior Josh Henderson scored after a ground out by senior Shane Fillman.
 
* Abington cut the deficit down to one run in the top half of the eighth.  Marrero drove in Fallers with a double to left field and then Hoguet dropped down a sacrifice bunt to score senior Eric Rollins
 
* In the ninth, the Nittany Lions got the tying run on base as Fillman led the inning off with a walk.  However, the Seahawks' Quinton Maris forced a ground ball double play and then retired the next batter with a ground out to close out the game to earn the save.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Doherty drove in a team-high two runs as he went 1-for-4 with a walk.
 
* Fallers and Rollins each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
* Marrero finished 1-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.  He also walked twice. 
 
* Henderson went 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
 
* For St. Mary's, Cole Tarleton finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.  Ryder Chalk picked up his first win of the season after going six innings and striking out eight batters.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh and eighth matchups between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2022 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 5-3 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, March 25 as the Nittany Lions host the University of Valley Forge in a non-conference contest.  First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
