Abington Picks Up Road Victory Against Neumann

Aston, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team defeated Neumann University by the score of 7-2 in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon at ESCS Memorial Courts.

How It Happened
 
* Abington trailed 2-1 in the match after doubles competitions as Neumann edged out an 8-7 victory at second doubles and won third doubles, 8-2.
 
* The duo of senior Josh Kurek and freshman Wenxu Gu led its first doubles match against Daniel Bonowski and Jason Petrin 3-2 before winning the next five games to take the match, 8-2.
 
* The Nittany Lions went on to take all six singles matches to clinch the match.  At first singles, Gu won in straight sets by the scores of 6-4, 6-2.  He trailed his first set 4-1 and came all the way back to take the set with five straight points.
 
* Kurek notched the win at second singles with ease as he won his match against Petrin, 6-1, 6-3.
 
* Senior Neil Guarino went the distance against Vince Landis at third singles.  After dropping the first set, Guarino bounced back with a 6-3 victory in set number two.  He went on to win the match with a 6-2 win in the third set.
 
* Freshman Tripp Mangifesta rallied to get the win at fourth singles.  After dropping the first set, 6-3, to Joe Troilo, Mangifesta took a tight second set, 7-6.  Mangifesta trailed 4-3 in the tiebreak and won four straight games to win the, 7-4, to take the second set.  Mangifesta won the 10-point tiebreaker in the third set by the score of 10-4.
 
* At fifth singles, sophomore Nick Talarico took the opening set over Anthony Carpinella, 6-3.  Talarico dropped the second set (7-5), but bounced back in a big way winning the third set in shutout fashion at 6-0.
 
* Sophomore Adrian Schembri cruised to a two-set victory at sixth singles.  Schembri defeated James Leuzzi by the scores of 6-1, 6-3.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Neumann.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, March 30 as the Nittany Lions host Cairn University to open United East Conference (UEC) play.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.
