Abington Defeats Cairn to Open United East Play

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team jump started United East Conference (UEC) play on a high note as the Nittany Lions defeated visiting Cairn University, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.  The match was called with fifth and sixth singles unfinished due to rainy conditions.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took all three doubles competitions to lead 3-0 entering singles play.  At first doubles, Wenxu Gu and Josh Kurek trailed 2-1 but went on to win seven of the next nine games to take the match, 8-4.  The duo of Neil Guarino and Tim Belotserkovsky cruised to an 8-0 victory at second doubles, while Nick Talarico and Tripp Mangifesta won their third doubles match by the score of 8-6.
 
* In singles action, Abington took all four matches in convincing fashion.  Gu defeated Michael Wilson in straight sets by the scores of 6-2, 6-2 at first singles.  Kurek did the same against Timothy Robinson at second singles winning in straight sets by identical 6-2 scores.
 
* Neil Guarino won his third singles match against Joel Kim in straight sets by the scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
 
* Mangifesta won his first set against Daniel Strange by the score of 6-2 before taking the second set without giving up a game at 6-0.
 
* Fifth and sixth singles went unfinished.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-1 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 3 as the Nittany Lions head to Maryland to face St. Mary's College in a United East contest. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
