Abington Drops DH to Nationally Ranked Christopher Newport

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader against nationally ranked No. 20 Christopher Newport University on Saturday at Alverthorpe Park.  The Captains defeated the Nittany Lions, 11-4, in the opener and then edged Abington, 9-6, in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Christopher Newport broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning.  With the bases loaded, Scott Crosson drove in two runs with a double to left-center field.  Josh Reinhold followed with a three-run homer to make the score 9-2.
 
* Both teams scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
 
* Abington hit three solo home runs in the game, including a second inning shot by senior Josh Baar.  Senior Montana Milward hit a homer in the sixth, while freshman Donato Incollingo belted one in the eighth inning.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Senior Sean Doherty went 2-for-5 in the game with a double and an RBI.
 
* Milward also had multiple hits as he went 2-for-4.  His sixth inning home run marked his third of the season.
 
* For Christopher Newport, Brandon Cassedy improved to 5-0 on the mound as he struck out 13 batters in seven innings of work. Crosson finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI, while Reinhold went 2-for-5 as well with two runs and three RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two the Nittany Lions trailed 2-0 entering the fourth inning.  Abington scored five runs in the frame to grab its first lead of the game at 5-2.  Junior Josh McGee drove in the team's first run with a single to right field after the Nittany Lions loaded the bases.  Senior Eric Rollins then stepped up and launched a grand slam over the right field fence to give the Nittany Lions a 5-2 lead.
 
* The Captains cut the deficit to one run after scoring a pair of runs in the fifth.  However, the Nittany Lions responded with a run in the sixth to increase their lead to 6-4.  Senior Shane Fillman drove in Rollins who led the inning off with an infield hit.
 
* In the top half of the seventh, Christopher Newport once again cut the lead down to one after a sacrifice fly by Gus Croll.  The Captains then regained the lead in the eighth with two runs.  Doc Daniels tied the game with a solo home run before Aaron Maxie drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single.
 
* The Captains scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to lead 9-6.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Rollins went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI.  His fourth inning homer marked his second grand slam of the season and his sixth long ball that leads the team.
 
* Junior Jake Fallers finished 2-for-3 with a run, while Doherty went 2-for-4.
 
* For Christopher Newport, Maxie went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while Jake Benedict finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Christopher Newport.

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Stockton University.  First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
