Yanss Pitches Complete Game Shutout to Start 2024 Season

Little River, S.C. – Penn State Abington junior Gretchen Yanss stifled the Wilkes University offense as she held the Colonels to just three hits in the team's 3-0 shutout victory on Monday morning at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.  The Nittany Lions will face Eastern Nazarene College later this afternoon with an estimated first pitch set for 1 p.m.

Location: Little River, S.C. (NMB Sports Complex)

How It Happened

* A three-run fifth inning was all the Nittany Lions needed to secure a season opening win.  Freshman Marlena Hacker led the inning off with a triple to right field.  Wilkes right fielder Ayva Knowles made a sliding attempt to catch the sinking line-drive hit but the ball took a bounce allowing Hacker to get to third.  Hacker would then score on a wild pitch during freshman Victoria Butler's at-bat to give Abington a 1-0 lead.

* Butler drew a walk and Yanss followed with a single to right field advancing Butler to third.  Freshman Ava Livingston then connected with a single to center field scoring Butler as the Nittany Lions extended the lead to two runs.  Two batters later, junior Callie Chambers hit a sacrifice fly to right field to driving in Yanss to cap the scoring.

* In the bottom of the seventh the Colonels got the leadoff batter on base with Hannah Boyd hitting a double to center field.  However, Yanss was able to retire the next three batters with ease to secure the shutout victory.

Inside the Numbers

* Yanss finished the game with five strikeouts and is now two away from 200 for her career.  She currently ranks second all-time with 198 strikeouts trailing only former standout and current assistant coach Becca Dougherty who struck out 307 batters in her career (2016-19).  Yanss also went 1-for-4 at the plate with a run.

* Hacker finished the game 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.

* Livingston also had a multi-hit day as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

* For Wilkes, Mia Butka went a full seven innings and struck out nine batters.  Butka allowed three runs on eight hits.

All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Wilkes.  The previous match up took place at Myrtle Beach back in 2022 with the Colonels taking the win.
