Abington Splits a Pair Down in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a pair of non-conference contests as the Nittany Lions continued its Myrtle Beach trip at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Thursday.  Abington dropped its opener to Bridgewater State University, 8-6, but bounced back to take the latter game against Cedar Crest College, 6-2.

How It Happened vs. Bridgewater State
 
* After falling behind in the top half of the first, 2-0, the Nittany Lions rallied in the bottom of the inning to exit with a 3-2 lead.  Junior Gretchen Yanss helped her own cause with a run scoring single to put the Nittany Lions on the board.  Later in the inning Abington took advantage of a two-out fielding error by the Bears that resulted in a pair of runs.
 
* In the top of the second the Bears' Victoria Becker tied the game with a solo home run to leftfield.
 
* Abington once again responded with three runs in the bottom of the third.  The Nittany Lions took benefited off another two-out fielding error by the Bears which resulted in another run.  It allowed junior Drew Liss to step to the plate and deliver a two-run single to left-center field to give the Nittany Lions a 6-3 lead.
 
* In the fourth the Bears scored five runs to regain the lead.  Janet Jolly highlighted the inning with a two-run hit. 
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Bridgewater State
 
* Yanss finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with a run and an RBI.  In the pitching circle she tied her season-high with seven strikeouts.
 
* Liss went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs.
 
* For the Bears, Jolly went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Becker finished 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Bridgewater State.
 
How It Happened vs. Cedar Crest
 
* A five-run fifth inning turned out to be the difference in the game.  Trailing 2-1, the Nittany Lions had five runners cross the plate to grab their first lead of the game at 6-2. 
 
* Freshman Marlena Hacker gave the Nittany Lions the lead with a two-run double to left-center field.  She then scored on a base hit by junior Callie Chambers
 
* Freshman Isabella Antosiewicz drove in Chambers with a triple before scoring herself on a sacrifice fly by freshman Ava Livingston
 
* Cedar Crest jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring its only runs in the top half of the first.  The Nittany Lions got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Chambers connected on a two-out double scoring Hacker.

* Freshman Paula Casale (1-1) picked up her first collegiate victory as she went five innings allowing just one earned run.  She finished the game with a season-high five strikeouts.
 
* Hacker went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Chambers also picked up a pair of hits as she went 2-for-3 with two RBI as well.
 
* Livingston finished the game 2-for-2 with an RBI.
 
* For Cedar Crest, Natalie Hasert went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Cedar Crest since the start of the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-2 versus the Falcons in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will wrap up its Myrtle Beach trip on Friday, March 8 as the Nittany Lions face Misericordia University at 11 a.m. and Norwich University at 1 p.m.
