Abington Wraps Up Myrtle Beach Trip with Victory Over Norwich

Little River, S.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team closed out its Myrtle Beach trip with a non-conference victory over Norwich University on Friday afternoon at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.  The Nittany Lions defeated the Cadets, 3-1, to finish the week 3-5 overall.  Earlier in the afternoon Abington fell to Misericordia by the score of 9-1.

How It Happened vs. Misericordia
 
* Misericordia broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top half of the fourth inning.  Kate Mager highlighted the inning with a two-run double.  The Cougars added four more runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 7-0.  Nikki Elliott had a run scoring triple and Kaitlin Redling connected on a two-run homer in the inning.
 
* Abington spoiled the Cougars' shutout bid with its lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.  Junnior Callie Chambers drew a bases loaded walk to force in sophomore Emily Foxhill who reached base earlier in the inning with a single to right field.
 
* Misericordia tacked on two more runs in the seventh with a two-run single by Emma Griffin.

* Sophomore Emmalee Myerholtz struck out four batters in her first start of the season.
 
* For the Cougars, Griffin finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Misericordia since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-5 versus the Cougars in the all-time series.
 
How It Happened vs. Norwich
 
* Freshman Isabella Antosiewicz came through with a two-run single in the top half of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Nittany Lions a 3-1 lead.  Freshman Rylee Albany led the inning off with a walk and Foxhill followed with a bunt hit.  Freshman Victoria Butler then moved both runners into scoring position with a slow ground out to the pitcher setting up Antosiewicz.
 
* In the bottom of the inning, freshman Paula Casale got out of an early jam with a double play before retiring the final batter to close out the game.
 
* Abington scored the game's first run in the top half of the fifth with a delayed double steal.  With Albany at third and Butler at first, Butler broke for second and once the Norwich catcher threw done to second, Albany broke home to score.
 
* Norwich tied the game in the sixth inning with a run scoring hit by Rachel Kempf.

* Casale (2-1) picked up her second win of the season as she pitched her first career complete game.  She struck out three batters and held the Cadets to just five hits. 
 
* Antosiewicz went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
 
* Albany finished 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked just the second meeting between Abington and Norwich and the first since 2020.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-1 versus the Cadets in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 as the Nittany Lions host Sarah Lawrence College in the team's home opener at Huntingdon Field.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
