Abington Sweeps Gallaudet in United East Doubleheader

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team continues to roll in United East Conference (UEC) play as the Nittany Lions swept Gallaudet University in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the GU Softball Complex.  Abington won the opener by the score of 6-4 and then took game two, 7-2.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Victoria Butler led the game off with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to score the game's first run and give the Nittany Lions an early 1-0 lead.
 
* The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when the Nittany Lions took advantage of three errors by the Gallaudet defense.  Freshman Marlena Hacker delivered a two-run single to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.  Hacker scored later in the inning on the Bison's third error.  Junior Hailey Gamble had a run scoring triple and then scored on a base hit by junior Gretchen Yanss as Abington led 6-0.
 
* In the bottom of the fifth the Bison scored their first run after a dropped fly ball led to a run.  Gallaudet made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh.  With two outs and two on, Christina Elsbury singled to center to drive in a run.  Andi Sisemore followed with a two-run triple to make the score 6-4.  Despite the rally, Abington managed to record the final out to hold on to the two-run victory.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Hacker went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Butler drew a pair of walks and scored twice in the game.  She also had a pair of stolen bases and is now 9-of-10 on the year.
 
* Yanss (6-5) earned her sixth victory of the season as she held Gallaudet to just one unearned run in five innings of work.  She allowed one hit and struck out seven batters.
 
* For Gallaudet, Sisemore went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lacey Drolsbaugh (2-8) went the full seven innings and struck out eighth batters.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two both teams scored single runs in the opening inning before Abington scored two runs in each of the next two frames to lead 5-1 after three innings.  Hacker had a two-run single in the second inning, while freshman Rylee Albany had a two-run base hit in the third. Both run scoring hits came with two outs in the innings.
 
* Hacker recorded another RBI in the bottom of the sixth to give the Nittany Lions a 6-2 lead.  Abington tacked on another run in the seventh to cap the scoring in the game. Albany registered her third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Gamble who led the inning off with a double.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Hacker and Albany each drove in three runs in the victory.  Hacker finished 2-for-4, while Albany went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
* Gamble finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Junior Drew Liss also had multiple hits as she finished 2-for-3 with two runs.
 
* Freshman Paula Casale (6-3) picked up her sixth victory of the season after going four innings and holding the Bison to just two runs. 
 
* Freshman Danielle Procopio pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn her second save in as many appearances.
 
* For Gallaudet, Drolsbaugh went 1-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 39th and 40th matchups between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 34-6 versus the Bison in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 13 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 1 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions' rescheduled non-conference doubleheader scheduled for Thursday, April 11 has been canceled due to incoming rain that is supposed to hit the region.
