Abington Drops United East Doubleheader to Berks

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader to visiting Penn State Berks by the scores of 5-0 and 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Berks scored three runs in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie in game one.  Naomi Fay led the inning off with a walk and then stole second before advancing to third in a sacrifice bunt.  Paige Brightwell hit a groundball to third and Fay got caught in a run-down but eventually scored.  Brightwell found her way to third during the run-down and then scored on a groundout.  Lauren Ziegler capped the scoring in the inning with a solo home run to center field.
 
* Berks added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to increase its lead to 5-0.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Sophomore Victoria Butler had three of the team's six hits as she went 3-for-4 at the plate. 
 
* Junior Gretchen Yanss went the distance for Abington as she struck out eight batters; one shy of her season-high.  Yanss also went 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
 
* For Berks, Ziegler went 3-for-3 with a solo home run. Brightwell (8-6) earned the win as she struck out nine batters in seven innings of work.  She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, Abington struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second.  Freshman Ava Livingston led the inning off with a base hit to left field and then scored on a triple by junior Hailey Gamble.  Junior Callie Chambers followed with a single to left to drive in Gamble to give Abington a 2-0 lead.
 
* The Abington lead would be short-lived as Berks responded in the top half of the third with two runs.  Duff and Rylee Tineri each drove in runs in the inning.
 
* Abington had a chance to go ahead in the bottom of the fourth.  Gamble and Chambers led the inning off with back-to-back hits but were both stranded on base as the score remained tied at 2-2.
 
* In the seventh, went ahead 4-2 after scoring two runs each on wild pitches. 
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)

*  Gamble and Chambers each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game for Abington.
 
* Livingston and freshman Marlena Hacker each had a hit.
 
* For Berks, Tineri went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Emily Smith finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Duff earned the win as she went seven innings with six strikeouts.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 42nd and 43rd matchups between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 9-44 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 16 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
