Abington Splits Doubleheader with Griffins

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Gwynedd Mercy University on Tuesday afternoon at the Frank O. Genuardi Legends Softball Field. The Nittany Lions won the opener, 2-0, while the Griffins came away with a 4-2 victory in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Ava Livingston drove in the game's first run in the opening inning which provided all the offense the Nittany Lions would need.
 
* Starting pitcher, junior Gretchen Yanss, held the Gwynedd Mercy offense to just two hits over four innings of work.  She struck out seven of the 15 batters she faced in the game.
 
* Sophomore Emmalee Myerholtz pitched three innings of relief and allowing just three hits while striking out one.  As a result, she earned her first career save.
 
* Abington scored an insurance run in the top half of the seventh when freshman Marlena Hacker scored freshman Sara Slimm with a base hit to centerfield.  Slimm pinch ran for freshman Paula Casale who led the inning off with a single.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Isabella Antosiewicz went 2-for-3 with a run.
 
* Hacker finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Ashley Haggerty went 2-for-3 at the plate and pitched a complete game.  She scattered eight hits through seven innings and allowed two runs.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In the night cap, Abington jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning.  Freshman Victoria Butler led the inning off with a base hit through the left side.  She went on to steal second and then third base before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Hacker.  Antosiewicz, who reached on an error and then stole second, scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
 
* The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth when the Griffins pushed four runs across to grab their first lead of the game.  Grace Scally highlighted the inning with a three-run double before scoring a run herself on a groundout.
 
* Emily Murphy (3-5) held the Nittany Lions to just one base hit the final two frames as she held on to the two-run victory to earn her third win of the season.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Yanss finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
* Butler went 1-for-4 with a run and two stolen bases.
 
* Livingston (1-for-3) and junior Hailey Gamble (1-for-3) each had hits for the Nittany Lions.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Scally finished 3-for-3 with a run and three RBI. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third and fourth matchups between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2018 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-3 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, April 18 as the Nittany Lions travel to Penn College for a United East Conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
