Abington Shuts Down Berks, 9-0

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's tennis team picked up its first United East Conference (UEC) victory of the season after defeating Penn State Berks, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

How It Happened
 
* Abington cruised through doubles action as the Nittany Lions opened the match with a 3-0 lead.  At first doubles, senior Elizabeth Turner and freshman Laurie Flemming came away with an 8-2 victory after scoring eight of the final nine points against Bel Clayton and Alyssa Love.
 
* The team of senior Elisa Steinhardt and sophomore Soniyah Youngblood won their second doubles match by the score of 8-2.  At third doubles, senior Taylor LaPage and junior Isabella DePorre won with ease at 8-1.
 
* In singles play the Nittany Lions won all six competitions in straight sets.  Flemming won her first singles match against Bel Clayton, 6-1, 6-3.  Turner won her second singles match against Alyssa Love by the same scores but in reverse.  Turner won, 6-3 and 6-1.
 
* Steinhardt won her third singles match against Sam Hagenbush by identical 6-3 scores.
 
* At fourth singles, Youngblood defeated Katelyn Victoria 6-4, 6-4.
 
* DePorre shutout Lesher in the first set of their fifth singles match before winning the second set, 6-3.
 
* Sophomore Abbey Anderson shutout Kiara Altine at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 19th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 10-9 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, April 15 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Harrisburg in a United East contest.  Match time is set for 2 p.m. at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.
