Abington Splits Doubleheader at Penn College; Takes Season Series

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at Penn College on Sunday afternoon at Bowman Field.  The Wildcats took the opener by the score of 6-2.  The Nittany Lions bounced back and took game two by the score of, 9-8, to take the season series.  Game two was called after six innings due to weather.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington tied the game at 1-1 in the top half of the fourth when junior Josh McGee drove in senior Shane Fillman with a base hit to right-center field.  Fillman led the inning off with a single up the middle.
 
* In the bottom of the fourth, Penn College broke the tie with a four-run inning.  The Wildcats registered five hits in the inning, including a two-run base hit by Quinn Hanafin.
 
* The Nittany Lions got one of the runs back in the top half of the fifth after Fillman drove in junior Josh Henderson who led the inning off with a base hit.  However, that would be the final run scored by Abington in the game.
 
* The Wildcats tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth.  Matt Munoz hit an RBI single with two outs in the inning.
 
Inside the Number (Game 1)
 
* Three players recorded multiple hits for the Nittany Lions.  Junior Jake Fallers went 2-for-3 with a double, while freshman Donato Incollingo finished 2-for-2 with a walk.  Henderson went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run.
 
* Senior Sean Doherty had an extra base hit in the game as he went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
 
* Junior Owen Lynch pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Nittany Lions.  Lynch struck out two batters in his appearance.
 
* For Penn College, Hanafin went 2-for-3 with three RBI.  Griffin Vollman (3-1) earned the win as he went five innings allowing two runs on eight hits in the game.  Vollman struck out three batters.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* It was an explosive opening inning for the Nittany Lions as 13 batters went to the plate accounting for eight runs on four hits as well as four walks.  A sacrifice fly by Fallers put the first run on the board for Abington before Incollingo connected on a three-run shot to maek the score 4-0 before the Nittany Lions registered an out.
 
* Fillman, who walked in his first at-bat in the inning, stepped to the plate again in the first and cleared the bases with a three-run double to left field to give Abington an 8-0 lead.  Two batters prior, freshman Gabe Marrero drove in a run with a base hit to center field.
 
* Penn College scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and then scored again in the second inning with a run scoring single by Hanafin.  The Wildcats then tied the game at 8-8 with a five-run eighth inning. The home squad recorded six hits in the inning with Brandon Shane highlighting things with a two-run double.
 
* In the top half of the fifth, a bases loaded walk by Doherty with two outs in the inning turned out to be the clutch RBI of the game.  Doherty forced home senior Eric Rollins who kept the inning alive with a two-out single.  Henderson followed with a base hit and then Marrero walked to load the bases.
 
* In the final two innings the Wildcats managed just one baserunner when Hanafin walked in the bottom of the fifth with two outs. 
 
* The game was called after six innings due to weather.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Fillman and Incollingo eached had three RBI in the game.  Fillman went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, run and a walk, while Incollingo finished 1-for-2 with a run and two walks.  Incollingo's first inning home run marked his sixth of the season.
 
* Doherty scored twice in the game and had an RBI while walking three times.
 
* Henderson finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
 
* For Penn College, Dallas Griess went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Jaiden Augustine finished 3-for-4 with two runs.  Hanafin went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 29th and 30th matchups between Abington and Penn College since the 2015 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 19-11 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Monday, April 15 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Gwynedd Mercy University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
