Abington Falls to Griffins in Non-Conference Contest

Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team dropped a non-conference contest at Gwynedd Mercy University by the score of 15-2 on Monday afternoon at Frank O. Genuardi Legends Baseball Field.

How It Happened
 
* The home team Griffins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back.  Gwynedd Mercy put up three runs in the first thanks to a bases loaded walk, a sacrifice bunt and then a single by Sam Junker.
 
* The Griffins added a run in the second and three more in the third to increase their lead to 7-0.
 
* Gwynedd Mercy broke the game wide open with an eight-run fourth inning. Drew Haines highlighted the inning with a three-run double that capped the scoring to give the Griffins a 15-0 advantage.
 
* Abington spoiled the Griffins' shutout bid with a pair of runs in the top half of the seventh.  Senior Shane Fillman and junior Jake Fallers each drove in runs.
 
* The game was called after the top half of the seventh with the mercy rule being implemented.
 
Inside the Numbers
 
*  Senior Sean Doherty went 2-for-4 with a run and a double.
 
* Faller and Fillman each drove in a run for the Nittany Lions.
 
* Junior Adam Christopher led the seventh inning off with a base hit in his lone plate appearance after entering the game in the fifth.
 
* Freshman Holden McKinley pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing just two hits while striking out two.  Fellow freshman Ben Mitchell pitched a scoreless sixth inning in his collegiate debut. Mitchell also had a strikeout.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, Junker finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.  Haines drove in five runs on a 3-for-5 afternoon.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-4 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, April 17 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Cairn University in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 1:30 p.m.
