Abington Edged by Harrisburg, 5-4

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team fell short against visiting Penn State Harrisburg by the score of 5-4 in United East Conference (UEC) action on Monday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took a 2-1 lead after doubles competitions after taking both second and third doubles by identical 8-7 scores.  At second doubles, seniors Neil Guarino and Josh Kurek trailed 7-6 and erased two match-points to force a tiebreaker.  The due trailed Andrew Schreck and Vik Patel, 4-1, early on in the tiebreak but eventually tied the score.  Schreck and Patel regained the lead at 5-4, but Guarino and Kurek rally again to win the next three points to take the tiebreak, 7-5, and win the second doubles match, 8-7.
 
* At third doubles, sophomore Tim Belotserkovsky and Nick Talarico led Derwin Merca and Clayton Herb, 7-5 in the match.  However, Harrisburg came back to tie the match and force a tiebreak.  Belotserkovsky and Talarico trailed 3-2 in the tiebreak but rally to win the next three points to lead, 5-3.  The Abington duo went on to win the tiebreak, 7-4, to take third doubles at 8-7 and give the team a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
 
* In singles play, Harrisburg won at second singles to tie the match at 2-2.  Abington though recaptured the match lead at 3-2 after freshman Wenxu Gu won his first singles match against Cooper Wheeler.  Gu dropped the first set, 6-0, but bounced back to take the second set by the score of 6-2.  Gu trailed Wheeler 3-2 in the third set but rallied to take a 5-3 lead.  Gu held serve for the 6-3 win.
 
* Harrisburg once again tied the match with a victory at third singles.  However, Abington once again regained the match lead with a victory at fourth singles.  Freshman Tripp Mangifesta won his match against Merca in straight sets by the score of 6-1 and 6-3 to give Abington a 4-3 lead in the match.
 
* The match came down to fifth and sixth singles with Harrisburg winning both to take the match.  Vik Patel won at fifth singles to tie the match at 4-4 before Clayton Herb clinched the match for Harrisburg with a victory at sixth singles.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the sixth meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 1-5 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, April 18 as the Nittany Lions host Penn College in United East action.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
