Abington Clinches Postseason Spot with Win Over Wildcats

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team officially clinched a spot in the upcoming United East Conference (UEC) tournament after defeating Penn College, 7-2, in a conference match on Thursday morning at the Legacy Tennis Center in Philadelphia.

How It Happened
 
* Abington took all three doubles competitions to start the match with a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.  The team of seniors Neil Guarino and Josh Kurek cruised to an 8-1 victory at second doubles over Matt Williams and Jayden Manbeck. 
 
* In first doubles, freshmen Wenxu Gu and Tripp Mangifesta trailed 5-4 against Kyle Shuler and Jesse Kight.  The Abington duo won the next four points to take the match, 8-5. 
 
* Sophomores Tim Belotserkovsky and Nick Talarico went the distance against Hunter Knosky and Logan Ogden at third doubles.  In the tiebreak, Belotserkovsky and Talarcio won the final three points to take the tiebreak, 7-4, and win the match, 8-7.
 
* In singles action, Mangifesta shutout Knosky at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0. 
 
* Kurek defeated Kight at second singles with ease in straight sets by identical 6-1 scores.
 
* Gu won his first singles match over Shuler in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
 
* Sophomore Adrian Schembri finished off Manbeck at sixth singles by the scores of 6-1, 6-2.
 
* The Wildcats earned points at third and fifth singles. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2015 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-2 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 20 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Lancaster Bible College in the regular season finale.  Match time is set for 1 p.m.
