Abington Swept by Wildcats in United East Doubleheader

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader on the road against Penn College on Thursday afternoon at Elm Park.  The Wildcats won game one by the score of 2-1 in extra innings and capped the afternoon with a 9-0 victory in a five-inning game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington scored early in the game when junior Gretchen Yanss helped her own cause with an RBI infield hit that scored freshman Ava Livingston.  Livingston led the second inning off with a walk moved around the bases on a sacrifice bunt by junior Hailey Gamble and then on a base hit by junior Callie Chambers
 
* The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions until the bottom of the sixth when the Wildcats tied the game on a run scoring double by Grace Lorson. 
 
* Neither team scored in the seventh setting the stage for extra innings with the game tied 1-1.  In the bottom of the eighth, the Wildcats scored the game-winning run with a base hit from Margaret Mangene.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 1)
 
* Yanss received the hard-luck loss as she went 7.1 innings allowing one earned run while striking out five batters.  With her five K's, Yanss surpassed 100 strikeouts for the second straight season and is now six away from 300 for her career.  Furthermore, she needs 13 more strikeouts to tie the program's all-time record of 307.
 
* Freshman Victoria Butler also had a hit for the Nittany Lions, including Chambers, Gamble and Yanss.
 
* For Penn College, Mackenzie Weaver (10-5) picked up her 10th win of the season as she struck out 15 batters.  Weaver allowed one run and scattered four hits in eight innings of work.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Penn College scored five runs in the bottom of the first to take a commanding lead early in the game. Ivvy Morder and Jesse Brumbaugh had back-to-back two-run hits with two outs in the frame.
 
* The Wildcats scored a single run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Weaver and then added three more runs in the fourth. Three different players drove in runs in the inning.
 
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
 
* Freshman Marlena Hacker had the team's lone hit; a first inning double as she went 1-for-1 with a walk in the game.
 
* For Penn College, Fayth Anderson (8-2) earned her eighth win of the season as she struck out eight batters in the five-inning game.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 21st and 22nd matchups between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2017 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-18 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, April 20 as the Nittany Lions host Gallaudet University in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is slated for 1 p.m.
