Abington Falls to Cairn in Non-Conference Match

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington and Cairn University women's tennis teams resumed its suspended match from March 30 on Tuesday afternoon at the Abington Tennis Courts on campus.  The Highlanders defeated the Nittany Lions, 7-2, in the non-conference match.  The match was suspended due to weather midway through singles competitions on the original play date back in March.

How It Happened

* The Nittany Lions won at first doubles as the team of senior Elizabeth Turner and freshman Laurie Flemming won a tiebreak to pick up the point in doubles.  Abington led 7-4 before Reagan Griffith and Ersy Neal rallied to tie the match at 7-7.  In the tiebreak, the Nittany Lions trailed 1-0 and won the next four points to lead 4-1.  Turner and Flemming went on to win the tiebreak, 7-3, to take the match, 8-7.

* In singles action, Flemming earned the team's lone point as she defeated Griffith in straight sets. Flemming jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and went on to win the set, 6-2.  In the second set, Flemming fell behind 4-1 and was down 40-15.  She won the next three points to break and held serve to make the score 4-3 before Griffith increased her lead to 5-3.  Flemming tied the set at 5-5 and then again at 6-6 to force a tiebreak.  In the tiebreak, Griffith led 2-1 but Flemming won the next three to lead 4-2.  Griffith grabbed another point to make it 4-3, but Flemming won the next three to win the tiebreak, 7-3, and ultimately the set, 7-6.
