Abington Defeats Chargers in Regular Season Finale

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's tennis team defeated Lancaster Bible College, 6-3, in the United East Conference (UEC) regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at the Hempfield Rec Center.  The Nittany Lions wrap up conference play with a 5-2 record and secured the third seed in the upcoming United East Tournament.  Abington will face second-seeded Penn State Harrisburg in the semifinals on April 30.

How It Happened
 
* Abington picked up a pair of wins in doubles competitions to start the match.  At second doubles, sophomores Tim Belotserkovsky and Nick Talarico went the distance with Cole Scheihing and Cameron Tripp to win the match 8-7.  Belotserkovsky and Talarico won the tiebreak point, 7-4.
 
* In third doubles the team of freshmen Lucca Frederico and Tripp Mangifesta won their match 8-2 over Andrew Kelly and Austin King.
 
* Lancaster Bible snuck a win at first doubles by winning a tiebreak over seniors Neil Guarino and Josh Kurek.  The Chargers' Caleb Cavaiani and Josh Jarvis won the tiebreak point, 7-5, after Abington rallied to tie it at 5-5 after being down 5-2.
 
* In singles play, the Nittany Lions finished 4-2 to take the overall match, 6-3.  Mangifesta won his third singles match over Tripp after dropping just one game.  Mangifesta won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.  Sophomore Adrian Schembri did the same in his fifth singles victory over Kelly winning 6-0, 6-1.
 
* Belotserkovsky cruised to a straight sets victory over King at sixth singles by identical 6-1 scores.
 
* At fourth singles, Talarico defeated Scheihing in straight sets by the score of 6-3 and 6-2.
 
* Lancaster Bible earned the points and first and second singles.
 
Getting Hot at the Right Time…
Abington started its season 1-5 and have won six of its last eight matches to finish the regular season with a 7-7 record.  The team concluded conference play 5-2; the most conference victories since going 5-0 in the NEAC in 2015-16.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 14th meeting between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-6 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will not shift gears to the post season and will head to Harrisburg on Tuesday, April 20 for a United East semifinal match.  More information on the upcoming conference tournament will be available in the coming days.
