Abington Defeats CCNY on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team gave its Senior Class one last victory at Alverthorpe Park as the Nittany Lions defeated The City College of New York, 12-4, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon in the team's final home regular season contest.  Prior to the game, the Nittany Lions recognized its seniors competing in their final game at Alverthorpe in part of Senior Day festivities.  This year's class included, Josh Baar, Joe Christian, Sean Doherty, Brandon Hightower, Ryan Lenderman, Alex Margot, Montana Milward, Justin Pizzo and Ja'nai Vaughan.

How It Happened
 
* Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, the Nittany Lions flipped the script and scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead.  The first three batters in the inning reached base with freshman Donato Incollingo driving in the team's first run.  Milward followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.  Later in the inning, Pizzo drew a bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run.  Doherty then came through with a sacrifice fly while Shane Fillman drove in a run with a base hit to cap the scoring. 
 
* The Abington offense continued where it left off in the fifth inning with another seven runs to increase the lead to 12-2.  Milward scored the first three runs with a three-run home to left-center field.  Later in the inning Doherty forced in a run with a fielder's choice grounder to short stop to make the score 9-2.  Fillman stepped up next and ripped a shot over the right field fence for the team's second three-run homer of the inning. 
 
* CCNY scored a single run in the sixth to cap the scoring in the game. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Fillman finished the game 3-for-5 with four RBI, tying his season-high.  His fifth inning homer marked his fourth of the season.
 
* Milward also drove in four runs as he went 2-for-4 at the plate.  His three-run homer in the fifth marked his seventh of the season.  He also doubled in the game.
 
* McGee also had multiple hits in the game as he finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
 
* Senior Brandon Hightower (2-4) picked up his second win of the season as he pitched six strong innings allowing just two earned runs.  Hightower finished the game with four strikeouts.
 
* Junior Josh Henderson and sophomore Mike Sukeena combined for three perfect innings to close out the game.  Henderson retired six straight batters in the seventh and eighth innings with a pair of strikeouts, while Sukeena finished off the Beavers three up, three down with two strikeouts in the ninth.
 
* For CCNY, Colin Souther went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.  Souther connected on a fourth inning solo homerun to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead. Kevin Budzinski finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the sixth meeting between Abington and CCNY since the start of the 2015 season and the first since 2017.  The Nittany Lions are now 5-1 versus the Beavers in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 27 before shifting gears to the postseason.  The Nittany Lions will travel to face Lancaster Bible College in a designated non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is set for 12 p.m.
